The Formphasers

Phase Twelve: Lifetime Forever

It was words like this, words like “fear” that made Kyuhyun’s hair stand on end. It was words like “poisons” and “injury” and “fifty-fifty chance” that made goosebumps rise on his arms. And it was words like “grave” and “dire” that made him feel like his life was ending.

Kyuhyun was a quiet person in general. He never really liked to talk as a rule. He much preferred looking down at a distance. But he did talk despite his quiet demeanour. But this time, it seemed like his silence would cost him a great deal more than he intended. Because Alpha Kyuhyun of the canines was in love with a dying feline who didn’t love him back.

!*!*!*!*!

Sungmin could barely move. His head felt heavy; his body felt light and he could hardly keep one thought in his mind. It took all his concentration just to twitch part of his body to show that he was alive.

The doctors of both canine and feline origin looked at him and regarded his situation. The cut in his side had turned a dark purple. All agreed that there was poison on the blade. What it was, they weren’t entirely certain but they knew that if Sungmin didn’t have the ability to fight it off, he was going to die a horrible and terrifying death.

They suspected that the poison in question was from the eto plant of foreign habitat. If that was the case, then it would be up to Sungmin to rid his body of it. An old medicine practice of leeches was suggested but Kyuhyun vetoed that particular suggestion rather violently.

Sungmin could vaguely hear the doctors talking about treatments, medicines and painkillers but none of those, Sungmin knew, would work. Every time he moved, unbearable pain exploded from the gash in his side. He knew that it was pretty much up to his body to rid itself of the pain.

The feline was tired. Almost too tired to fight the poison off. His body had been phasing from human to feline on its own in order to better deal with the pain. Fur or skin, it didn’t matter. Sungmin had no idea how long he had been lying in delirium but he knew that if he stayed in this state much longer, chances of survival were slim.

It was three days after the poison had rushed through his body that Sungmin had vomited black blood from his mouth. The doctors took this as a good sign, no matter how grim it appeared. It was a sign that Sungmin’s body was ejecting the poison inside.

Doctors had been swarming around Sungmin all day. Sungmin had been listening to them talk. He could barely move his own body due to the lack of energy he had. According to their diagnostics, he was doing all right for someone of his state. He had survived three nights without issue and was becoming stronger even if he didn’t feel like it.

Within four days of that report, Sungmin was feeling more alert. He was getting better. Two days later, he took a turn for the worse. He could barely open his eyes. From that relapse, he regained strength. The doctors said that now he was past the point of falling back into sickness.

Sungmin could now sit up for short amounts of time and stopped phasing and re-phasing. He spent most of his time sleeping, recovering from the attack on his body. He woke at odd hours and took whatever medicine was given to him.

He woke at six in the morning and looked around. Unlike times before, there was nobody in the room. Sungmin wondered if they thought him a lost cause. He sat up and rubbed his eyes. He spotted the vial that contained the medicine that would enhance his immune system.

He saw nobody around so he pushed himself up to stand. The world turned and spun. Sungmin’s legs could barely support him. He tried to take a step forward and fell. Two arms wrapped around him and caught him just before he hit the stone floor.

“What were you thinking?” Kyuhyun’s voice asked. Sungmin blinked. He braced himself against Kyuhyun and pulled himself upright.

“I…I was trying to get my medicine,” Sungmin whispered, his voice hoarse from days of disuse. Kyuhyun’s grip tightened.

“Then why didn’t you wait for someone to get it?” Kyuhyun asked, his voice carefully controlled. Sungmin couldn’t find the breath to answer. Kyuhyun picked him up and placed him back on the bed. Sungmin watched with slightly hazy eyes as Kyuhyun picked up the vial and brought it to him.

The canine uncorked the vial and brought it to Sungmin’s lips. The feline flushed a light pink as he drank the liquid inside. The cool fluid cascaded down his burning throat. Sungmin smiled slightly as he leaned back.

“Why…are you here?” Sungmin asked.

“I’m taking care of you,” Kyuhyun answered. He recorked the bottle and put it to the side. He sat beside Sungmin’s bed and looked at him.

“Why?”

“What do you mean, why?” Kyuhyun asked.

“I’m just moral obligation…aren’t I?” Sungmin rasped. His throat hurt but he wanted to know the purpose of Kyuhyun’s visit.

“How can you think that?” Kyuhyun demanded, his voice rising. Sungmin winced. His ears hurt from the loud noise. He was used to quiet from the past few days.

“Because I’m meaningless to you,” Sungmin replied. Saying out loud hurt more than hearing it. Saying it finalized those words. Sungmin turned his head to the side as he began to tear up. Kyuhyun’s intake of breath from above him made.

“Where did that utterly ridiculous idea come from? You’re not…” Kyuhyun choked on his own words.

“I’m not what? Hmm? You…you told me…to forget about our coupling…you told me to forget about it!” Sungmin’s voice rose as well. The sound that he was forcing out of his throat made it hurt more but the feline didn’t care.

“What did you expect me to do? You have never looked at me the way I’ve looked at you!” Kyuhyun glared. His eyes burned.

“I don’t hate you! You always seem to dislike me but I’ve never hated you! Why else do you think I would let you have sex-” Sungmin was cut off.

“Is that all our mating was to you? Sex?” Kyuhyun asked softly.

“What do you want it to be?” Sungmin growled. He was on the verge of semi-phasing. Kyuhyun looked at him, eyes wide and vulnerable.

“I thought we made love…” Kyuhyun answered. Sungmin’s eyes opened wide. And then he realized. Kyuhyun really did love him. He hadn’t imagined it. Kyuhyun was in love with him. Sungmin felt his heart leap at the thought.

“I thought we did too…until you told me that it was meaningless to you…that I was meaningless,” Sungmin whispered.

“I told you…I told you that I loved you after our mating. You never answered. I had never felt more broken. I loved you and you…you never said anything. It was so hard to live without knowing,” Kyuhyun babbled.

“I thought I heard you…but then I fell asleep. You tired me out completely!” Sungmin said before he realized what he sounded like. He covered his mouth with one hand while simultaneously blushing bright pink. A soft look came into Kyuhyun’s face.

“I was cold to you because I thought you didn’t love me. You never said anything,” Kyuhyun murmured.

“I thought you didn’t want to listen to me,” Sungmin answered.

“Is that why Heechul attacked me? Or tried to?” Kyuhyun asked. Sungmin turned pink again.

“Yeah. He got angry because I cleaned my claws of the poison for you and he didn’t think that the way you were acting was-” Sungmin found himself getting cut off again.

“You removed the poison for me? Why would you do that?” Kyuhyun demanded, his eyes widening in amazement. Sungmin almost felt like hiding.

“I…I did it because I didn’t want to kill you accidentally…”

“So you destroyed your most valuable weapon for me?”

“I guess so,” Sungmin looked at Kyuhyun steadily. He was starting to feel drowsy but he wouldn’t fall asleep when Kyuhyun was trying to say something. He had learned the disastrous results that came of it.

“You’re tired. You should sleep,” Kyuhyun pushed Sungmin so he was lying back. Then, not missing a beat, curled up on the bed beside the feline. He moved so that Sungmin’s head was lying on his chest and his body curved around Kyuhyun’s. The feline felt his face warm.

“I-” Sungmin began.

“I think this is quite overdue. I feel like a complete fool. You never pushed me away, you never told me to stop. I never saw the signs. Even though we’ve both been hurt by this, I still want to say it and I think it’s high time I did,” Kyuhyun gently kissed the top of Sungmin’s head. “I love you, kitten. I love my Jaguar Kitten,” Kyuhyun whispered. Sungmin nearly gasped as his heart beat faster.

“I love you too, Kyuhyun. I love you,” Sungmin murmured. He felt Kyuhyun tilt his head upwards and he met Kyuhyun in a kiss that sizzled with the emotion within each other. Sungmin could taste their love on Kyuhyun’s lips. The feline let out a soft mewl of happiness as they broke apart.

“I never thought you would care for me, let alone love me,” Kyuhyun mumbled. His voice was like silk in Sungmin’s ears. The feline purred in contentment.

“I thought the same thing. I was always uncertain of if you cared for me or just acted like it,” Sungmin smiled.

“I really do care for you. When I discovered that your claws no longer held the tainted onyx, I was so scared. You had lost your one weapon against the canine race. Anything could have happened to you,” Kyuhyun smoothed Sungmin’s hair.

“I’m sorry,” Sungmin apologized.

“Don’t apologize. I’m the one who should be apologizing to you. I never meant to hurt you. I did not know you loved me,” Kyuhyun sighed. Sungmin nuzzled in closer.

“How could I not? You’re a wise ruler, you protected me, you called to me. You are part of me now,” Sungmin began to drift into sleep. Just before his eyes closed, he heard Kyuhyun say one more thing.

“And you’re mine, Jaguar Kitten.”

!*!*!*!*!

For the next few days, Sungmin began to regain strength. He started walking again even though he was shaky. Ahra sent Eunhyuk to aid him whenever he needed it and Donghae often helped him get to places he needed to go.

The entire canine race was on the lookout for the assassin who had changed into a timber wolf. All timber wolves were summoned to the palace in order to be checked. Kyuhyun even asked Siwon to go even though the scent was different from the original wolf.

None of the summoned pack was the wolf who had attacked them. Sungmin was concerned mostly for Kyuhyun’s wellbeing. He was nicely protected in the palace but Kyuhyun often left to go to the market in order to see if he could find the one that attacked him.

It wasn’t until Sungmin pleaded for Kyuhyun to give up the search (he was afraid Kyuhyun would get hurt) that Kyuhyun finally agreed to drop it. The search for the last assassin was called off. But it didn’t matter. Ten days later, the wolf turned himself in.

!*!*!*!*!

It was five am in the morning and Sungmin felt as though something like this could have waited until a decent hour. It may have discomforted the prisoner to be woken at such an hour but it was unpleasant for the Alphas as well.

“State your name.”

“I am Kim Hyunjoong,” the timber wolf introduced himself. Kyuhyun regarded him coldly.

“Why did you attack my mate and I?” Kyuhyun asked, his voice stiff with ice.

“Because your mate is a blemish upon the clean race of canines,” Hyunjoong answered.

“You are aware that such an attack is considered treason and therefore, the punishment is beheading?” Kyuhyun’s eyes were hard. Sungmin never wanted to get on Kyuhyun’s bad side.

“Yes I am aware. But I have nothing to live for now. Youngsaeng, Kyujong, Jungmin and Hyunjoon are all gone. Your mate killed them. What do I have to lose but my life so I may see my family again?” Hyunjoong asked.

“Then you will be okay with immediate punishment will you not?” Kyuhyun demanded. His arm went around Sungmin’s waist and pulled him close.

“I will be ready for whatever the crown throws in my path,” Hyunjoon replied.

“Then the punishment shall be swift and merciless. Eunhyuk, take the prisoner to the block. A blunt sword shall be used,” Kyuhyun ordered. Sungmin winced. A blunt sword to cut off the head of the assassin sounded like a pretty good punishment to him.

As the prisoner was led away, Sungmin turned to Kyuhyun. He was met with a gentle kiss on his mouth. Sungmin wondered how he could have survived without this touch from his mate. The cat inside of him purred.

But he felt worried at the same time. How many more attempts would they have to wait for? If one of those attempts worked, what then? Sungmin couldn’t bear to think about a life without Kyuhyun. But could they make it work even between themselves?

“Kyu?” Sungmin asked softly.

“What is it?”

“Can we ever make this work?” Sungmin murmured.

“Why don’t you just wait and see? We have a lifetime together.” Kyuhyun smiled. And he bent down and kissed Sungmin lightly, just as the sun’s rays broke from behind the eastern hills.

~137 Years Later~

“Sungkyu! Wait up!” A feline ran up from behind Sungkyu.

“You took so long that I was lonesome. So I left without you,” Sungkyu pouted. Minhyun’s green eyes shone. He leaned over and kissed Sungkyu gently.

“Am I forgiven?” the feline asked.

“Of course you silly cat! Now let’s go! We’re late!” Sungkyu pulled Minhyun down the road.

“I love you,” Minhyun murmured. His voice became almost like a purr.

“I know you do. This coyote loves you too,” Sungkyu smiled. The two of them looked at each other, not knowing that one hundred thirty seven years earlier, their love wouldn’t have been possible at all if not for two princes whose love allowed those after them to share a love that they had felt before moving into forever.
