The Formphasers
Phase Ten: Meaningless Kitten
Bright sunlight streamed through the open window of the Fortress. Inside, canines were waking, some already awake and others were still asleep. The only feline in the Fortress was curled into the side of a canine, drifting from sleep to wakefulness.
Sungmin purred, a deep sound coming from within his throat. He was waking up, slowly as all of his kind did. He felt the warmth that was beside him vanish and a soft whimper passed his lips as he tried to find it again.
The sounds of water reached his ears and he opened his eyes a sliver. Kyuhyun was in his bathing room. Sungmin smiled. He turned over and felt a slight discomfort as he did so. The exertions of last night were taking a toll on his body.
He heard the door to the bathing room door open. He sat up, pulling the sheets up with him and looked at Kyuhyun who had emerged fully dressed.
“You’re awake,” Kyuhyun said, sounding surprised. Sungmin nodded.
“Yes, I am.”
“We have to go back to the Crystal Den today. We should get prepared,” Kyuhyun turned to leave. Sungmin felt a wave of confusion. Why was Kyuhyun acting this way?
“We need only-”
“We need many guards. Your claws are no longer poisoned. I discovered that when I woke up this morning and there were claw marks all over my back due to last night and I wasn’t dead.’
“Oh, right,” Sungmin frowned. He hoped that Kyuhyun wouldn’t find out about that; he didn’t want the canine to worry.
“Yes, so we need many guards,” Kyuhyun began to leave.
“Kyuhyun-” Sungmin began. The canine turned and faced him with an emotionless expression.
“Listen, I know what you’re going to say. I feel the same way. Last night only happened because I was in heat. Let’s try to forget about it and move on,” Kyuhyun said, voice cold before turning on his heel and leaving the room.
Sungmin wasn’t sure whether he had been stabbed or whether it just felt like it. He stared at the door that Kyuhyun had vanished through. That wasn’t what I was going to say. I don’t feel the same way you do. I thought…but he couldn’t finish the thought.
He thought Kyuhyun loved him. He thought that Kyuhyun felt the same way. It hurt so much to know that he had been wrong. Sungmin’s body trembled with the effort of keeping his tears in. He couldn’t believe it. His mate thought last night only happened because of his heat. Sungmin thought he knew how he felt.
The feline sat there, looking at the door, pain between his legs because of the position he was sitting in. But it was the pain in his heart that really hurt him. Sungmin bit his lip hard enough to draw blood.
!*!*!*!*!
Breakfast was a rather subdued affair. Kyuhyun remained silent through the meal and Sungmin was trying his hardest not to break down into his meal. Ahra sensed the tension between them but said nothing. She was confused.
The two of them acquired their horses and rode to the border between the canine and feline lands. An entourage of at least ten canine guards came with them. Sungmin would have originally been flattered by the protection but today, he just felt like a burden. He remained silent throughout the journey.
When they reached the feline border, Sungmin immediately dismounted and walked to the pack of felines that waited to escort them to the Crystal Den. Kyuhyun followed him and the group began to walk down a worn path towards the palace.
Sungmin could barely function. His body was heavy, his head was hurting and his heart was nonexistent. He walked with a slow gait, not caring if the entire pack had to slow down for him. In fact, there was little that he cared about at all right now.
As they reached the palace, Sungmin had the urge to go and find Ryeowook and more importantly, Jungsu. He sped up, surpassing the group as they reached the doors. He darted inside and was stopped by Jongwoon who had just thrown his arms around him.
“We missed you around here!” Jongwoon exclaimed, hugging his charge. Sungmin cracked a small smile.
“I missed you too. Have you seen Ryeowook?” Sungmin asked. Jongwoon shook his head.
“I have no idea where he goes after breakfast,” Jongwoon answered. Then he turned to Kyuhyun. “Kyuhyun, I require your assistance. We received word about the threat against Sungmin’s life and because you were there, we need to know what sort of guards should protect him apart from myself…” Jongwoon’s voice faded as Sungmin left.
He felt so empty. So void of anything inside of him. He continued down the hall, wondering dully where Ryeowook might be. A light sound to his left made him turn his head. Jungsu’s recognizable laugh floated down the hallway. Sungmin began to run towards the sound.
He skidded into one of the scholars rooms, banging the door open as he did so. Jungsu, Heechul and Ryeowook looked towards him.
“Sungmin! You’ve returned!” Ryeowook cheered. He jumped up and ran to hug him. As Sungmin felt those caring arms wrap around his neck, he began to cry. The tears he had kept inside were now unleashed and Sungmin found he couldn’t do anything to stop them.
“Why are you crying?” Jungsu asked in complete concern. He stood up and walked over to where the two of them stood. Heechul followed, his amber eyes wide.
“It’s Kyu-Kyuhyun!” Sungmin sobbed.
“What happened to him? Was he attacked? Is he okay?” Ryeowook asked.
“Sungmin, your mate mark is red,” Heechul pointed at Sungmin’s collarbone. Sungmin had forgotten that the shirt he was wearing partially exposed his neck. He tried to cover the mark but the damage had been done.
“You’ve mated?” Jungsu gasped, pushing aside Sungmin’s shirt to get a better look. The jaguar looked away.
“I thought they had already mated,” Ryeowook said, frowning.
“He means they’ve mated as in they’ve coupled with each other, otherwise known as sex!” Heechul snapped. Ryeowook’s mouth opened in a large ‘O’.
“Then why are you so upset?” Jungsu asked. Sungmin looked at him, large eyes brimming with tears.
“Because I love him and he doesn’t love me! We had mated last night and this morning, he tells me to forget about it because he was in heat and it meant nothing!” Sungmin cried. There was a collective intake of breath from around the room. Sungmin didn’t know whether it was because he said he loved Kyuhyun, the fact that they had sex or that it was meaningless that they had mated fully.
“You love him?” Ryeowook asked, sounding slightly mystified as though loving Kyuhyun was like wanting to get married to a reptile.
“Yes, I love him. And he…I thought he loved me. When we were…..he just…I just knew! Or I thought I did. But I guess I was wrong…it hurts so much!” Sungmin sobbed. Jungsu hugged Sungmin tightly.
“You’re really in love, aren’t you?” Heechul asked, sounding soft and gentle. It was a rarity for him. Usually he would be telling anyone to move on and ignore it. But not now.
“I would do anything for him. And I thought he liked me. He was always so protective and caring and when he kissed me, he was very gentle. But…..now…” Sungmin dissolved into tears once more.
“What’s going on here?” The voice of Youngwoon came from the doorway. Sungmin didn’t even bother to look up. He felt lifeless. His heart had been stolen and broken by the canine and he didn’t even know.
“Sungmin mated with Kyuhyun who doesn’t love him,” Ryeowook informed the tactics officer.
“What?! Sungmin mated with a dog?!” Youngwoon asked incredulously.
“Halt your tongue if you are going to be rude!” Jungsu snapped. “Sungmin loves Kyuhyun and now he’s had his heart broken because of it. Kyuhyun has not returned his feelings and called their coupling meaningless.”
“Sungmin…” Youngwoon trailed off helplessly. He had known Sungmin since he was a kitten and felt that the jaguar was a younger brother to him. He hated the sight of a broken Sungmin. The male should only ever be filled with happiness. But because of Kyuhyun, he was broken.
“I’ll go beat Kyuhyun up for you if you wish it,” Youngwoon offered.
“No, I don’t think he’ll appreciate it. If I destroyed my claws to rid them of the onyx only to have another use it against him, there was no point in my cleansing,” Sungmin hiccupped.
“You cleaned your claws of the poison?!” Heechul gasped.
“Yes, I didn’t want to hurt Kyuhyun so I-” Sungmin was interrupted.
“I’m going to give that dog a piece of my mind! You have destroyed your only weapon against him because you trust and love him and he repays you by crushing your heart! I will not stand for it!” Heechul shouted. He actually made to march out of the room but was stopped by Youngwoon.
“If you go storming through the palace like this and attack the Alpha, then we’ll have the whole canine race after us,” Youngwoon said, pushing Heechul back.
“I don’t care!” Heechul snarled, his amber eyes fiery. “Sungmin doesn’t deserve that! He’s not a meaningless kitten!” Heechul semi-phased, glaring at the barrier that prevented him from leaving.
Heechul at half form was formidable. The pupils of his amber eyes were slits and his claws were longer than average. The black and white ears that came to the top of his head twitched angrily and his fangs were bared.
“Stop it both of you. This isn’t going to help,” Ryeowook said. Sungmin curled up on Jungsu’s lap. The snow leopard hugged him close.
“Is Sungmin here?” Kyuhyun poked his head through the door. The temperature in the room dropped a few degrees. Jungsu, Ryeowook, Heechul and Youngwoon all looked surprised to see Kyuhyun.
There was a snarl and a large tiger leapt at the door, claws extended and mouth open in a terrifying smile. Youngwoon dodged in front of Kyuhyun and immediately shifted into his fur. There was a screech as the tiger got a mouthful of mane instead of Kyuhyun.
The two felines crashed into a desk and quills and ink fell off. Ryeowook ran to try and save his compositions before they got wrecked. Youngwoon was doing a terrific job of keeping Heechul at bay. The lion herded the tiger into a corner of the room and kept him there.
“Stop! Stop! What are you doing?!” Jungsu screamed. Kyuhyun stared at the two battling felines. Heechul ignored Youngwoon and kept trying to get to Kyuhyun. Youngwoon was having none of it. He knew the consequences of Heechul’s actions. One scratch from one claw and Kyuhyun was dead. Not everyone was as trusting as Sungmin.
“What’s going on?” Kyuhyun asked, still half behind the door. Heechul tried to get past Youngwoon by feinting left and then running right. Youngwoon was prepared and checked Heechul with his shoulder.
The tiger flipped over the desk and onto the ground. Youngwoon phased back into his skin and walked over to Heechul who had also changed into his skin and was looking slightly battered. Heechul glared at Youngwoon but made no move to re-phase.
“Stop it. Kyuhyun, what do you want?” Sungmin asked, looking towards the canine.
“Precedent Misun wants you to go over preparations for a party you will be hosting in five weeks. She sent me for you. She needs the both of us,” Kyuhyun answered. Sungmin nodded and walked towards him.
“I shall talk to the rest of you later. Thank you for being with me,” Sungmin managed a small smile for his friends and then walked out with Kyuhyun. He swore that he would remain normal. He wouldn’t let this affect him. But as he walked beside Kyuhyun, his heart beat painfully fast.
!*!*!*!*!
“Why did you stop me?!” Heechul demanded as soon as Sungmin was gone.
“You know why. If you had made even the smallest scratch, he would be writhing on the floor right now and dead in the next minute. Would you really want to be the killer of the one Sungmin loves even if he is the one who broke our Minnie?” Youngwoon asked.
“At least Sungmin would have peace later and not spend his time questioning why he is unlovable,” Heechul growled.
“Some things we can’t change. We can only hope,” Jungsu sighed.
