See, before the episode aired - all during the summer basically - I kept having these conversations mostly with
scrunchy about how I just can't get myself to care after the horrible mess that was especially the season finale / part of the season, and that I had to keep reminding myself to watch this. So I came at this episode from a place of dread and I have to say...
I AM TOTALLY ON BOARD THE SERA GAMBLE TRAIN NOW.
That was pretty great!
The opening montage was gorgeous. Dean and Lisa and Ben works for me so, so well, and I can't even begin to tell you how happy the tiny bit where Dean is cooking breakfast for his family makes me.
Everything about Lisa and Ben is just WIN. She's calm and smart and reasonable, and knows exactly what she's doing, knows how fucked up Dean was and why he's so fucked up. And also she's gorgeous.
Also the stuff with YED was terrifying. Of course, those are Dean's biggest fears realized but sometimes it's good to have them spelled out. And it's interesting that Sam wasn't part of that scenario, aside from obviously Ben being a Sam substitute. (I'd also like to know what Sam's greatest fears were, because is it about hell, his mom or Dean?)
And then there's Sam. Sam who clearly came back wrong and how everything about Sam is emotionally muted. Even Dean came off a little muted in Sam's presence - though all hurty and sharp around the edges when he realizes that Sam (and Bobby) let Dean think that he was dead for a year [sidenote to
greenet: AHAAHAHAHA] - but he wasn't angry enough about it. I was waiting for Dean to punch Sam, and that never happened.
Though: "it's just better with you around." D'awww. Because Sam knows that he's a better dude when Dean's around. They make each other better when they don't make each other miserable.
Grandpa - also back wrong - and the Cousins are an interesting addition. I like the girl cousin and the Corin Nemec [hi Corin! are you going ot be playing Jonas to Sam or Dean this year? I hope so!] cousin, and the quiet cousin also has potential. And they're all ... very dark and mysterious and I would like to know more. So that's a good start.
I'm intrigued by Sam (and let me also say that this is one of the first times that has happened in a long while), and why Cas doesn't even listen to his prayers.
I hope Dean gets to keep his family. Of course Dean has to go back hunting but I'd want him to keep going back home between jobs, big happy family that cannot be hurt by the life. So Dean keeps his sanity; so Lisa doesn't feel like she was a bad mother for letting her son get attached to a man that just leaves; so Ben has an awesome dad; so Dean doesn't repeat too many of his own father's mistakes; so Lisa can have hot sexytiems with Dean; so they all can be happy.
