I don't understand. I don't think I ever will.
About 15 minutes into my shift, I get a phone call about a fight on the second floor. I finished checking in my guest and locked up the lobby and headed out. When I approached the stairwell near to where i was headed, I was met by a cop. He inquired after the gentlemen in the room that I was at. When we headed back to the front desk so I could get a master key, a large group of people were trying to get in one of the back doors.
As it turns out, this lady had been part of the fight I was sent up to. She ran out and grabbed the three kids from another room and fled to the office to wait for the cops. Her s.o. had hit her in the face at least once from what I could tell, and probably pushed her also, her leg was bleeding. How can someone hit another person like that? She didn't want to press charges. I got the impression she was scared to. I heard the phrase "I wish I could, but I can't." It made me want to cry. The youngest child, a girl maybe 5, asked me why her mommy was bleeding? That's what I'm crying over now. I see her face asking me why. I tried to mask my face as best i could and simply said that she got hurt and that she'll get better.
The mother couldn't get ahold of anyone, so I comped her a room for the night. I don't know if I'm allowed to, but I'm sure Terri, my manager, will understand. The middle girl, 8 or so, seemed to sense something was wrong , but I don't think she knew what. The oldest, a boy maybe 10 or 11, might have known. I've never understood how someone can hit someone they say they love. And today when adding those three factors (the children), how can the mother stay?
It's very scary to think about. Even after the diversion I just had, My eyes are still watering up. I've always said i'm a pacifist, this just makes it more so.
The diversion (just so I can end on a lighter note)
Someone locked themselves out of their room, soI had to grab a master key to open the door. I broke the key off in the door.. had to go to maitenance to grab some pliers to pull it out. They're safely in their room now.. I hope the rest of the night goes smoothly.
