Ivy sat in second row, the script open on her lap and her sneaker-clad propped on the chair in front. On stage Holly spun like a ballerina, making her princess pink skirts flare out.

Everyone applauded furiously. The director, the lead actor and the sixteen year old whose Mum made him come stared with adoration. She preened.

“Marvellous,” the director said. “You’re a star, my love.”

He turned to Ivy and waved a hand at the stage. “A moving backdrop. Can you do it?”

As they discussed it Holly glared enviously from the stage.
