'It's like camping,' Mum said, standing on an old stool to hammer up cheap sheets over the window. She was a little less pretty than she'd been last year. Last year they'd gone to a big house in Spain for their holidays. 'You always wanted to go camping.'
'With school,' Alice said, standing on one foot. She was old enough to know she was being mean, that Mum was trying to hide how bad things were. 'In tents.'
'This is better,' Mum said, climbing down. She crouched down and caught Alice's hand, smiling up at her hopefully. 'It's an adventure!'
