My Uncle's Sweatshirt.

Reconstructions continue!

Before

My Uncle Ray died unexpectedly my freshman year of college. I had a close relationship with him as a child, and had just began to work at rebuilding it, and it made me angry to have to stop. Long story short, I inherited his art supplies, and some of his household items, and this sweatshirt.

Fabric Detail

It was me or the thrift store/landfill and I loved the fabric -a thick double knit, white on one side and navy on the other- so I packed it away and toted it along for the next five years or so until an idea came to me. Yes. Here goes:

Option A

I cut it off below the armpits, then with much pinning and shaping created this top with drawstring straps/neckline.

Option B

It didn't take much to make said top reversible. But what about the top quarter of the sweatshirt?

Now with matching shrug!

I ripped the sleeves off the body of the shrug, then pinned and stitched them so they'd fit closely. I then had to take in the sides of the body so that the arm scythe and hole would match, then stitched them back together. The bow was born from the excess fabric from the sleeves.

Bow detail

Voila! In honor of my recent reconstruction binge, I've signed up for two months at Wardrobe Refashion. The pledge goes something like this: "I pledge that I shall refashion, rennovate, recycle preloved items for myself for the term of the contract. I pledge that I shall create and craft items of clothing for myself with my own hands in fabric, yarn or other medium for the term of my contract." No buying new clothes allowed.

Action shots are good.

I'm okay with that.
