The dog is looking apologetic
opening the back door to the waiting quiet outside
where the cars go by only occasionally,
and the men yell at their wives with the windows closed.

Go to make some jasmine tea,
the hot water steams,
my glasses fog over for an instant, oceanic and strange

the dog is barking outside, sharp, angry volleys of noise
that carry like the shouting
and she shouts at the night
I think maybe she shouts to act brave,
but really
she's as coward as the tea where it steppes in my mug.

-----

head's like a solid mass of junk, crinkled tinfoil where all the little folds of the brain go.
so much as to say I'd like to find some painkiller,
but i remind myself i don't even touch those things
i'm no health nut, no--I let my bloodsugar run high and sometimes very low, i don't always remember my insulin, i eat more sodium than the south of China--but I'm afraid of ulcers, and I shudder to think of all the pills i'd have to take to curb the damages these other pills have done.
so i grin that shiteating grin and bear it
and the tea really does help
but that barking's driving me up a wall.
