Resurrection Day

His hands were cool on Caedus’s face, familiar even after so long. Fighting against the blackness that seemed to pull against his mind, Caedus struggled to open his eyes, feeling the crust of blood on them and the sting of sweat.

“You’re not really here.”

“No?”

“No. You’re dead you know. You died…a long time ago.”

Caedus was surprised to feel his throat constrict tightly. He’d thought he was beyond this. This feeling. Caring. Remembering the young Jedi from so long ago. His brother.

“You never came back. I wanted you to…long ago.”

“I never left you, Jacen. I was always there. You didn’t want to see.”

Caedus squeezed his eyes tightly shut though it pulled at the wounds on his face. He could hear the explosions in the distance, sense the carnage it resulted in.

“There is no more Jacen. He died too.”

“You delude yourself.”

He knelt in front of Caedus, hands still gentle, comforting. Caedus opened his eyes again and looked at him warily. He still looked the same. A fine-featured face and dark hair and the pale eyes that held no accusations, only concern and memories. Forever young. Forever good.

“Can I come with you?”

Caedus felt shock at his own words but realized even as he said them that it was what he truly wanted.

“I’m tired, Anakin. Tired and used up and I have nowhere left to go.”

Anakin reached out to grasp both his hands in his own, looking down at them, unmindful of the dirt and the blood that covered Caedus’s.

After what seemed an eternity, Anakin looked back up at him and Caedus knew that he would be denied yet again.

“You can’t come yet, Jacen. One day…but not now.”

Caedus slid further down against the rough stone wall as a sense of despair seemed to wash through his broken body.

“Jacen…there are…things that need to be done and only you can do them.”

Caedus shook his head, gasping at the hot flare of pain. He didn’t even have strength yet to begin a healing process. He didn’t even want to.

“It’s too late for me, Anakin.”

“No.”

The word was simple but Caedus felt the surety behind it and he looked at his brother in wonder. The future teased at him with its always changing apparitions. What had once seemed certain was now as fragile as a tendril of smoke. He’d come full circle somehow and hadn’t even realized it.

“I can’t do it. You…you think too much of me, Anakin.”

Caedus’s voice had dropped to a barely audible whisper but the younger man looked up again and smiled at his words.

“I see the good in you, Jacen. You can change everything.”

Caedus slid down onto his side. Before his head touched the ground, Anakin slid under him to cradle him gently. Caedus could feel the boy’s warmth and he wondered how he could seem so real.

“You’ll see, Jacen. I’ll help you. I’ll save you.”

Jacen Solo closed his eyes, letting the words wash over him like a soothing wave.

“Yes.”
