Research in Motion, which runs the Blackberry service used by the government, law firms, and a gagillion other people settled its patent dispute with NTP, Inc.
See the article here. Basically, RIM lost a ton of patent cases against NTP, and the judge kept putting off the injunction because it would shut down Blackberry service (though they said that government workers wouldn't be affected.) Finally they settled. The judge actually yelled at the parties for not settling the case earlier (this was reported in an earlier story on the subject), because of the implications of imposing the injunctions. This whole scenario is an interesting case study about the United States patent system and it's effect on everyday life. Seeing as how I haven't actually read any of the pleadings or decisions of the case(s), I'm not going to make any comments about the case(s) themselves. But the newspaper articles I've read on the subject have been pretty interesting. I recommended taking a gander.
