What Would (Will) Bush Do? Taiwan has been making some major noise recently. From what I can gather, they have this committee that basically is just a political front, but on the surface either seeks reunification or better relations with China, which claims Taiwan as a province. Well, the Taiwan president has now essentially disbanded the committee, even though the Bush Administration has been pressuring him not to do so. The concession the Bush Administration got was a softening in the wording of the Taiwanese President's action. Originally he wanted to say he was abolishing the committee. Now it sounds like it's just not running now but can pick up later. This, clearly, doesn't make China happy. What interests me is what the Bush Administration would do if the Taiwanese government declared independence from China, and China invaded. The US government has long offered support for Taiwan, and in the NY Times article that I got a lot of this information from but will not cite (it's from today), it is apparently Taiwan's only major ally. While I doubt even the Bush Administration would go to full scale war with China over Taiwan even if our armed forces weren't pushed to the breaking point, I wonder how he's going to react. Let's just hope he doesn't have to react.

Also, there's an interesting article about the Chesapeake Bay and introducing some Asian oysters to try and buffer their natural oyster population which sounds near zero now, and to help improve the Bay's water. However, that might only be interesting to biological/ecological nerds like me.
