It puts the lotion on its skin!

This past week I have been concentrating on the basement. I decided that the best way to handle it was to clear out “my” side first so I’ve got a place to work on Penny’s side. I was just going to do basic cleanup and take a little bit of the built in shelving out, but as I started cleaning up the shelves, things started smelling like rat shit. The more I dug, the more I found, then when I came across a couple used hypodermic needles (luckily put back in their covers) I decided it was time to just tear it all out right now and get it clean. It was kind of fun just going into full demolition mode and smashing everything I didn’t want out. Most of it was pretty rotten and termites were starting to get into it anyway, so it’s better for the house to have it all gone too. So now I have a blank slate to start with and can set it up to work on the rest of the place. Next came Penny’s side. It didn’t have as much shelving just a bunch of really poorly built “work benches” and one nicer one in the back. There were also some old pipe fitting cubby-hole units down by the garage doors. The cubbies were a bitch to get out. They were really damn heavy, nailed into the walls in really strange and hard to find ways, and kept trying to rip off the wall paneling on the way out. I got them down a couple days ago, but didn’t have the energy to drag them out back. They were all built out of knotty pine and are pretty well oil soaked over the years, so they weigh in at about 75 pounds apiece. I managed to drag them out last night and demo out almost all of the other stuff on Penny’s side. Only the one “nice” workbench at the back remains. That needs to come out too, but I’m going to save the count top from it, so it needs to be removed a little nicer than I was doing last night. Once that is done, it’ll be time to go at the ceiling with brooms and then go at the walls and floor with a hose and get rid of all the remaining rat shit and concrete dust. Here are a couple pictures of how it all looks now. I’ll take some more soon.

A label on one of the shelves. I found a lot of Bell Jar lids and there were jar rings on a lot of the shelves on my side.

My side all cleared out, note the really weird baby sock light pull. I think that's going to stay

Penny’s side mostly cleared out, just got to demo out the bench at the end and figure out if we’re going to salvage the drawer unit from my side.
