Story: Remind Me of You
That year, the year 2011, the countdown to Christmas started on November 26th for Xander. That’s when he lit the first violet candle on his advent wreath of evergreen. Ignoring the curious gazes of the mini-slayers who were walking down the hall, he made sure the candle wouldn’t be able to fall, and set something on fire, and went on his way. Holes in the wall made by overzealous slayers wouldn’t fix themselves.
On December 3rd, Xander lit the second violet candle of his advent wreath. Again he ignored the prying eyes of the mini-slayers as he checked its stability. Whistling a Christmas tune he had heard on the radio earlier that day, he walked off to re-hang the
bathroom door that one of the mini-slayers had ripped off in her haste to intercept her boyfriend before he was whisked away by anyone willing to give him the shovel talk.
When December 10th came around, Xander had just gotten home from an exhausting late-night patrol. All he wanted to do was drag himself to the shower (three demons spewing red slime, enough said) and then to bed, but seeing the two burning candles-and noticing that technically it was already December 10th, seeing as it was after midnight-reminded him to lit the third candle, the rose one. Making sure it was standing up straight, he dragged himself up the stairs.
On December 17th, Xander found Dawn and Buffy waiting for him in front of his evergreen wreath. Giving them a small smile, he lit the fourth and last candle, a violet one again, before stepping back. Giving each other a hand, the three of them silently
stared at the four merrily-burning candles. A small smile escaping Buffy broke the silence. Turning to Xander, she gave him a quick
kiss on the cheek and a whispered thank you. Dawn quickly followed her sister’s example before following her down the hall.
It never ceased to amaze Xander that a gesture this small could bring back such good memories of their mother; of when they lit the candles with her at night, right before going to bed. Seeing the joy lit up their faces . . . For that alone he’d do his best to find
the perfect advent wreath each year.
End of “Remind Me of You”.
A/N: Roman Catholics often have an advent wreath at home. The traditional wreath is made out of evergreen, but others can be found. The point is the keep your wreath as simple as possible-nothing too lavish-in order not to distract from the symbolism. The colours of the candles used in this story weren’t picked randomly: violet is the traditional colour of the penitential seasons while rose is the colour of the Third Sunday of Advent, known as Gaudete Sunday (from the Latin word meaning “to rejoice”). Sometimes a white candle is added to the middle of the wreath to symbolise Christmas (also known as the Christ candle).
Any and all reviews (doesn’t matter which ones: ones that give a simple well-done or ones that give me some kind of feedback) are much appreciated. Flames will be given back to the people who gave them to me with a nice *cough* little note that sets them
straight on why I neither like nor condone flames.
