My Ennies predictions

Jul 14, 2014 15:24

Its Ennies time again, and now the judges have given us their nominations,
its time for the people to vote!
(which means Pathfinder wins stuff) :)
However, despite the fact that no awards system is perfect,
I think the Ennies works the best system, and does make sure every game gets a fair crack of the whip.
Sadly my Kuro adventure didn't make the grade this year,
neither did Victoria 3 which is a crime.
Walt did amazing work on the game and a nomination should have been a formality.
It will see a judges award if there is any justice.
So here are my predictions for the win and the nominations (through my haze of rejection and bitterness) in case you haven't seen them yet.

A very long post behind a cut

2014 ENnie Awards Nominees

Best Adventure
EPOCH: War Stories - Imaginary Empire
Razor Coast: Heart of the Razor - Frog God Games
Rise of the Drow - AAW GAMES LLC
The Sense of the Sleight-of-Hand Man - Arc Dream Publishing
Trail of Cthulhu: Eternal Lies - Pelgrane Press

So to start off with I must admit I don't know any of these.
But I do know that Pelgrane turn out some mighty fine Cthulhu stuff so I know where my vote is going.

Best Aid/Accessory
Fate Dice - Eldritch Dice - Evil Hat Productions
Kobold Guide to Magic - Kobold Press
Noteboard - Pelgrane Press
Numenera Creature Deck - Monte Cook Games, LLC
Odyssey: The Complete Game Master’s Guide to Campaign Management - Engine Publishing

Fate Dice??? Some green D6s? Seriously?
Being Fate they may actually win but the immensely popular Noteboard really deserves it.
I don't use this sort of thing in game but even I recognise how useful it can be.
Numenera will also probably take a prize on popularity, but it is pretty.
My vote will be going to Odyssey written by the marvellous Walt.
Not only because I know he does damn fine work but certainly to me it looks the most useful.

Best Art, Interior
Deadlands Noir - Pinnacle Entertainment Group
Numenera Corebook - Monte Cook Games, LLC
Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Gods - Paizo Publishing
Shadowrun 5th Edition Core Rulebook - Catalyst Game Labs
Shadows of Esteren Book 2 - Travels - Agate Editions

Tough one, and these days it is only getting harder.
I thought Deadlands Noir was a bit sparse for art as most of it was portraits.
Numenera will probably take the prize, but certainly deserves it.
My vote would go to Esteran though as the art and layout combined just nudge it above the others.

Best Art, Cover
Achtung! Cthulhu - Keeper’s Guide to the Secret War - Modiphius
Iron Kingdoms Full Metal Fantasy RPG: Kings, Nations, and Gods - Privateer Press
Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Mythic Adventures - Paizo Publishing
Razor Coast - Frog God Games
Shadowrun 5th Edition Core Rulebook - Catalyst Game Labs

This is an easy one to pick from as you just look at the cover.
I found Pathfinder rather samey as so many of their covers look the same.
Not sure about the killer shark on Razor Coast either.
So my vote would be with Achtung Cthulhu and Shadowrun, bit of which have a great dynamic to them.

Best Blog
Adventureaweek.com
Dorkland!
Gnome Stew
The Illuminerdy
The Other Side

Here I play favourites.
Go and vote for Walt's Gnome Stew (which is almost certain to win again)
but also spare a thought for Tim Brannan's Other side for all your witchy needs.

Best Cartography
Deadlands Noir Map: New Orleans & Hexaco - Pinnacle Entertainment Group
Map of the Flanaess - Anna B Meyer Fantasy Maps
Numenera Corebook - Monte Cook Games, LLC
Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Wrath of the Righteous Poster Map Folio -Paizo Publishing
Razor Coast - Frog God Games

I'm no expert on maps, so I'm basically picking at random.
But Flanaess looks very good work and is also something of an underdog I suspect.

Best Electronic Book
Broken Earth (Savage Worlds) - Sneak Attack Press
Corporia - Brabblemark Press
FT 0 - Faerie Tales from Unlit Shores: Prince Charming, Reanimator - Purple Duck Games/4 Winds Fantasy Gaming
Player’s Guide to Emerald City - Green Ronin Publishing
Shaintar: Legends Unleashed - Evil Beagle Games

Again, here I'm no expert.
I've looked over Corporia which is good work so I'm leaning to that.
Prince Charming sounds a fun idea not doesn't look very impressive.
Broken Earth though does catch my eye, if only for the cover which should have had a nod.

Best Family Game
Camp Myth: The RPG - Third Eye Games
Cogs, Cakes & Swordsticks - Modiphius
Fate Accelerated Edition - Evil Hat Productions
Hobbit Tales from the Green Dragon Inn - Cubicle 7 Entertainment
Little Wizards - Crafty Games

Without doubt this is the toughest category this year, and thats a good thing,
meaning we have a strong selection of games that might bring more mainstream families towards the hobby.
Corporate loyalty as well as good sense pushes me towards Hobbit Tales.
It is a damn good game and it looks just awesome.
Camp Myth intrigues me a lot and I'll certainly be picking up a copy to get a better look.
Cogs Cakes and Swordsticks is also genius from Lynne Hardy, and I am a big fan of Dr Geoff who does the art.
Sadly, the cut down version of Fate will almost certainly take this, which is a shame.

Best Free Product
Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition Quickstart - Chaosium Inc.
Pathfinder Module: We Be Goblins Too! - Paizo Publishing
Rocket Age - The Lost City of the Ancients - Cubicle 7 Entertainment
A Spark In Fate Core - Genesis of Legend Publishing
Super Powers Companion Villain Supplement - Pinnacle Entertainment Group

Hmmm, so where was my Kuro adventure? Curse you *shakes fist*
I'm not sure about quickstarts going in this category, it seems like putting in an advert.
The Spark does grab my interest, but my vote would have to go for Rocket Age.
Even through the bitterness of my not getting a nom, Ken has worked tirelessly to push Rocket Age and collected a strong collection of books for the line in only a year. He deserves something for all that excellent hard work.

Best Game
13th Age - Pelgrane Press
Fate Core System - Evil Hat Productions
Hillfolk - Pelgrane Press
Numenera Corebook - Monte Cook Games, LLC
tremulus - Reality Blurs

Very tough again.
13th Age is excellent,
and while Fate keeps getting nominated it is damn fine work.
Even looking for the popularist choice it is hard to see who will take this one.
Tremulus keeps cropping up here and while I suspect it is punching above its weight here deserves to get something.
My fingers will be crossed for Hillfolk though as not only is it good work it is designed to deal with social role-playing in a way we've not seen much of since Smallville.
I think really this one is between Fate and Numenera, with 13th Age the plucky outsider.

Best Miniatures Product
BattleTech: Alpha Strike - Catalyst Game Labs
Pathfinder Battles: Wrath of the Righteous - WizKids Games/NECA
Pathfinder Battles: Wrath of the Righteous Gargantuan Demon Lord Deskari - WizKids Games/NECA
Weird Wars Rome Enemies of Rome Figure Flats - Pinnacle Entertainment Group
Whisper & Venom Collector’s Set - Lesser Gnome

Miniatures, yeah well, not my thing.
Pathfinder will win because it does.
Weird Wars probably actually deserves it.

Best Monster/Adversary
Creature Decks: Creature Information Cards; 54 Aberrations & Magical Beasts - Inkwell Ideas
Midgard Bestiary: 13th Age Roleplaying Game Compatible Edition - Kobold Press
Monsters of Porphyra - Purple Duck Games/4 Winds Fantasy Gaming
The Ninth World Bestiary - Monte Cook, LLC
Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Bestiary 4 - Paizo Publishing

Having a monster book category strikes me as a holdover from D&D but what the hell.
Pathfinder is almost certain to take this again, followed by Numenera.
However, I'd like to see 13th Age get a gong.

This one is simple, Ken and Robin.
Nuff said.

Best Production Values
Iron Kingdoms Full Metal Fantasy RPG: Kings, Nations, and Gods - Privateer Press
Numenera Corebook - Monte Cook Games, LLC
Tenra Bansho Zero: Tales of Heaven and Earth - Kotodama Heavy Industries
Trail of Cthulhu: Eternal Lies - Pelgrane Press
Whisper & Venom Collector’s Set - Lesser Gnome

Oooh, tough one again.
I've not looked inside Eternal Lies, but it is hard to see past its excellence as a book to just look at the production.
Numenera will probably take this and deservedly so.
However, Tenra Bansho may be the outsider choice here as it is also a damn fine product.

Best RPG Related Product
Complete Eternal Lies Suite - Pelgrane Press
Dust and Mirrors: Music for Night’s Black Agents - Pelgrane Press
Monsters of Legend - Midnight Syndicate Soundtrack
Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords Base Set - Paizo Publishing
Strange Tales of the Century - Evil Hat Productions

Now I don't play music during a game.
Personally I find it horribly distracting as either a player or a GM.
However, I'd give a nod to Eternal Lies as having specific sound effects is a very different story.
To have someone actually making the announcements or the sound of the warehouse machinery is very useful.
I'm not sure how much of that is in Eternal Lies but I trust Pelgrane to deliver so thats where I'd throw my vote.

Best Rules
13th Age - Pelgrane Press
Fate Core System - Evil Hat Productions
Hillfolk - Pelgrane Press
Shaintar: Legends Arise - Evil Beagle Games
tremulus - Reality Blurs

Very tough again, and Fate will probably take this.
13th Age and Hillfolk will be the products that split my vote though.
Once again Tremulus appears, making me even surer I need to check it out.

Best Setting
Deadlands Noir - Pinnacle Entertainment Group
Numenera Corebook - Monte Cook Games, LLC
Razor Coast - Frog God Games
tremulus - Reality Blurs
Warbirds - Outrider Studios

I find this a slightly odd collection given some of the other nominees,
but this goes to prove its been a year of generic systems not settings.
I love the idea of Deadlands Noir but was rather disappointed in the final game.
Outrider makes a nice entry and gets a mexican wave for the nomination for a small company.
Tremulus appears again, please make sure it gets something!
Numenera will probably walk this one but it probably still deserves the win.

Best Supplement
Blood on the Snow: A DramaSystem Companion - Pelgrane Press
Deadlands Noir Companion - Pinnacle Entertainment Group
Fate System Toolkit - Evil Hat Productions
Mutants & Masterminds: Power Profiles - Green Ronin Publishing
Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Ultimate Campaign - Paizo Publishing

As I have some work in this one my vote goes to Blood on the Snow.
Although it does also deserve to win.
A collection of settings by this many writers of this calibre! Come on!
Pathfinder or Fate will probably take it though which is a travesty.

Best Software
Cityographer - Inkwell Ideas
Old School Monsters Database - Appbrewers.com
Realm Works - Lone Wolf Development
Roll20 - The Orr Group LLC
Wild Card Creator - Journeyman Games

No idea on this one.
I've just got no experience with any of them.
Cityographer looks very professional, but Roll 20 looks the most useful.

Best Writing
Achtung! Cthulhu - Keeper’s Guide to the Secret War - Modiphius
Doctor Who RPG: The Third Doctor Sourcebook - Cubicle 7 Entertainment
Numenera Corebook - Monte Cook Games, LLC
Owl Hoot Trail - Pelgrane Press
tremulus - Reality Blurs

My vote will be going to Doctor Who, not only as it is Cubicle 7 but its Doctor Who!
Owl Hot trail certainly deserves a nod though.
Numenera will take it I suspect, but Tremulus probably deserves it more.

Tabletop Audio

I'd go for see page XX because, well, Pelgrane are blood marvelous.

Product of the Year
13th Age - Pelgrane Press
Achtung! Cthulhu - Keeper’s Guide to the Secret War - Modiphius
Deadlands Noir - Pinnacle Entertainment Group
Fate Core System - Evil Hat Productions
Hillfolk - Pelgrane Press
Numenera Corebook - Monte Cook Games, LLC
Razor Coast - Frog God Games
Shadowrun 5th Edition Core Rulebook - Catalyst Game Labs
Trail of Cthulhu: Eternal Lies - Pelgrane Press
tremulus - Reality Blurs

Very, very tough, although basically a redo of so many other categories.
I want to see Hillfolk take this but I suspect it won't.
Shadowrun may be the winner here if Fate or Numenera don't take it.
Eternal Lies and Tremulus both deserve something too.

So, thats my predictions/rambling for the year.
Don't forget to vote, both for these and next year's judges!

conventions, thoughts, bloody marvellous, reviews, gen-con, gaming, rambling, victoriana
