Looking at the eclipse made me feel connected to the people who came long before me, who looked up at the eclipse the way I was looking up at it and realized that it was the shadow of the earth, and when they saw the shadow was curved they knew that the earth couldn't be flat like everyone believed at the time. Some people were sentenced to death because they wouldn't stop saying that the earth was round, and some, under fear of death, eventually renounced their former statements about the earth's roundness in front of tribunals. We shouldn't forget the people who suffered before us so that now we can all say confidently and freely that the earth is round.
