Fluffy snowflakes fall down silently on Ennis’ worn coat.
Shivering, he pulls his hat even lower.
His mare breathes out deeply, proceeding on her way through the deep white blanket.
Ennis pets her neck, muttering something only a horse understands.
The mountain frost makes his bones ache.
A single tear escapes his eye, forced by the biting cold.
He looks down at the saddle bag, knowing his precious cargo is protected and safe.
Leading the horse onto the well-known trail makes his heart beat faster.
Not far now until he reaches the place where he belongs.
Tendrils of smoke appear behind the snow covered tree line.
A faint light attracts the lonesome rider, filling his body with a warm glow.
When finally the little house comes in sight, it stops snowing.
The cattle’s lowing breaks the winter’s silence.
The mare quickens her pace, looking forward to getting home.
Home.

“Are you sure you’re warm enough?”
They sit by the fire, Ennis wrapping his arms around his friend.
“Quite fine now.”
They snuggle against each other.
“Thanks for your present.”
“Hm.” A light smile.
“But do you know what’s the best present?”
“Yeah, spending Christmas together with you, Jack.”
