Writerly Ways

I was thinking about tropes I no longer want to see any more. Not because I'm tired of them (looking at you arrogant disdainful detective in the Sherlock mold) but because they just might not be that great of an idea and yet have become somehow ridiculously popular.

For example, has there been a cop show where a cop is accused of shooting someone who was trying to shoot them first but the gun has gone missing? I mean I've seen that since the 70s. With all that's been going on in the last few years I'm hoping no one will DO that plot again.

OR

The alpha male asshole being held up as the ideal man in romantic plots. I have known people whose books were turned down because their love interest was too nice of a guy. Why in the hell is this such an issue in the romance genre? Meanwhile I just finished a book where the man says horrible things constantly to her, she's always calling him an asshole and yet they get a happy ending. I see this time and time again. I absolutely loathe it in YA fiction and young minds see this as how it should be. I am worn out by this. And let me point to Prodigal Son where we have Gil, Malcolm and JT, three non-toxic males. The female fans love them. I know that it is possible for people to see something in NICE men. Sadly I see this in gay lit too.

Any tropes out there you find worrisome?
