Harvest time, Ed mused, not that it mattered much today. He and Al couldn’t be further from Resembool if they tried. Mustang had sent them to the Creatan border tracking down an elderly alchemist who might have books that would aid the brothers in their quest. Ed’s breath curled in a white plume in the dawn air. Frost was definitely on the pumpkin today so maybe he had actually missed harvest time. What he was really missing was sleep. The old codger Mustang had them visiting had given them a few books but in exchange he wanted something. One of the things was to walk his beloved dogs, something the man was having trouble doing most mornings. Ed didn’t mind this so much but his time would be better spent studying or sleeping. What proper dog had to void its bladder three seconds after sunrise?

He glanced back at the still darkened house. Why exactly wasn’t Al doing this? He’s the one who liked animals, not that Ed didn’t. Al didn’t sleep nor did he get cold but those thoughts only made him feel sad and so terribly guilty. As for him, the cold was racing up his automail and right into his core. Mr. Bell reminded him a little of Granny Pinako though, same irascible argumentative but good-hearted nature.

He wondered if she was helping with the harvest. Winry was just as far away as they were, in Rush Valley where there wasn’t much to harvest. Back in the day, they all would help their faming neighbors. It had been hard, back-aching work but Ed found he missed it. Or maybe it was home and family he was missing.

He shook his head. No, all the family he needed was Al. Pinako and Winry were the family that waited, the home that was and may be again. But not yet. Not until he saved Alphonse. He had been right to destroy his home. Oh, the anniversary of that day was coming soon. It came not long after the harvest began.

Ed took the dogs on an extra long walk but he couldn’t outdistance his longing and his melancholy thoughts. One day, they’d manage it one day, of that he was certain.
