Firstly and foremostly:

Happy birthday, Meg!

You are a doll and I love you, but then you already knew that. <3 Enjoy legal mojitos and/or juleps, because they are makeable, and pretend I'm there to clink a glass to many happy returns, love.

Secondly, Corpus is going alright. I'm still coping with the culture shock of a small university (I miss my A&M so, so much some days), but I'm more or less used to living in a city, I think. And as my boss pointed out, I have actually lived in a city before - it wasn't long-term, but if I can handle London, I can handle Corpus. Lord knows the traffic is less insane.

Speaking of The Boss, she's kind of awesome. We get along really well, and I'm liking my job. I miss working with the old books, but this is more actively helpful to people, and that's good, too. I was a little afraid that this one would be a let-down simply because everyone at my old (first) job was so cool, but really, this is going very well. I'm pleased.

Classes are similarly going beautifully. One of them's a little dry, by dint of subject matter, but I love both my professors, and the other class is incredibly thought-provoking. (Also I got full credit yesterday on a short paper wherein I cited not only Watchmen, but also House, and it worked. I was half-convinced I'd get called on the carpet for that, but she really liked the examples.) I haven't met my faculty advisor yet, but she's apparently the one who teaches things like British lit and film and Tolkein, which is v. v. cool - everyone says she's really nice. She's doing a study on writers and their processes, and I'm going to try and be part of it, if she still needs subjects to interview. Should be interesting.

Basically, regarding graduate school, so far so good. I'm a little lonely, what with not having any friends at all in town yet, but it's okay. It'll get there.

In other news, I'm hoping to go hear Obama speak in College Station next month, and fiddling with the possibility of going to the Decemberists concert in a few weeks - all depends on time and/or money, but we'll see. Both would involve seeing friends, which I'm really feeling the lack of right now, so that's an extra incentive - even if the Decemberists would be in Houston, and oh, how I loathe that city. Still, I love Em and Chris more than I hate Houston. It's worth it.

Bogie's Gotcha Day was yesterday - I can't believe I've had him for three years, which makes him more or less six. Oh, but I love that dog.

So yeah. Life is good. It's a lot of different all at once, but I've found a favorite beach, and I get to see the bay every day on the way to school (which is on an island, which is incredibly cool). You can't go wrong with that.

school, life, general, rl
