I couldn't get London out of my head today (not sure why, that just happens sometimes); the rice pudding with breakfast may or may not be a contributing factor. (Ditto "Apple Scruffs", which I've a distinct memory of listening to at one point on the Tube. I don't think I could've been any happier in that moment, sketchy fellow-Tube-ers and all. There's something about the clacking and the movement and the color of the seats that makes me smile just thinking about it. I know this sounds stupid, but one of the first things I want to do the next time I'm in London is go somewhere - anywhere - on the Tube; it just makes me happy. It's like being plugged into the heartbeat of the city, somehow.)
Anyhow, I was skimming the BBC New's London section over breakfast, as I frequently do, and I came across this:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/content/articles/2007/10/01/nob_rubbish_river_video_feature.shtml If only I were in town, I would be all over that. I think it's a marvelous idea, which I told the people in charge in an email. I'm sure they'll think I'm nuts, given that I'm five thousand miles away, but I just had to say it. Brilliant idea. Wish I were there. The Thames adds so much to the character of the city, and it's really nice to see someone giving a damn about cleaning her up instead of just complaining about the smell. (I still say that's an unfair complaint; the Thames is tidal, there's bound to be a fishy smell from time to time!)
Today, I renew my efforts at job-finding. I have got to get back to London.
Oh, and the hurricane didn't directly impact me, but God, I hurt for the people just an hour and a half south of here in Houston, and Galveston is just devastated. Thoughts and prayers directed that-a-way would not be remiss right now.
