A certain individual who will go unnamed runs Yu-Gi-Oh card tournaments locally. This person first approached me at my store offering to promote the store and run events for a fee. His promised turnout never developed, so I reworked the deal so that I can't possibly lose money if not many people how up, and he now basically makes a commission. Now he gets a larger crowd.
A while back he came up with a plan to do a Western Cup, with hopes of hosting a Shonen Jump, or Regionals. He made some pretty impressive claims, such as having 87 confirmed players from Colorado, and a dealer from Florida etc. He also claimed to have a building he had just purchased, but kept having reasons why he couldn't show it off. He told me several times that he was cleaning the building but no progress was being made. He even tried buying stuff with a invalid check, invalid in the sense that the bank it was for had never had an account with that particular account number.
Last night he told me the landlord decided to not let him use it, this after earlier in the week he claimed he bought the building. He wanted to try to split the tournament up in several stores, which I was opposed to as I would not have exposure to all of them. One store offered to host it, but I would not be able to sell there, which was unacceptable after how much I bought for this tournament.
We ended up hosting the tournament with a total of 26 players, which is far short of the 150+ I was promised. I had to provide 2 booster boxes for the tournament, as I had my doubts, I purchased some very cheap boxes. I made 25% of the entry fee, and it more than made up for the cost of the boxes. I also sold a few yu-gi-oh packs as well.
this evening was busy, several first time Warhammer 40K players came in, and today was double a normal Saturday. I can hopefully get caught up on bills. Also we did character creation for Dark Heresy.
