ImageOut 2006: Part One of Two (hopefully)

Oct 08, 2006 22:44

ImageOut 2006 has officially begun and so far it's been a blast. My rambling, sleep-deprived recap of the festival thus far:

Friday night's Opening Night films, Laughing Matters... More! and Boy Culture both played to full houses. Matt and I went to Laughing Matters... More! since I hadn't seen it yet and while Boy Culture was good, I could wait a bit before seeing it again. Thankfully, LMM, a docu-comedy featuring four popular lesbian stand-up comedians, turned out to be hilarious. A Q&A session with two of the comics, Vickie Shaw and Sabrina Matthews, following the film was just as fun. Afterward Matt and I headed over to the after-party at Nasty D's where we chilled with the lesbians as the gay boys were all still watching Boy Culture. It was a good time. We had snacks, a couple drinks and spent our time chatting with a few of my fellow programming committee members.

Saturday afternoon Matt and I were joined by Stacey and we went to Songbirds, a fantastic musical-documentary about women in prison and it was, just as I remembered, absolutely amazing. Before the film a documentary short, called Rape For Who I Am, focusing on the experiences of several African lesbians, was shown. It was incredibly moving, though the films left the three of us slightly depressed. We returned to the festival later that evening to attend a sold out showing of A Love To Hide, a period drama about the Holocaust- and one of the best films of the festival in my personal opinion. Everyone loved the film but, once again, we left slightly depressed. Because I failed to consider the fact we were watching three depressing-as all-get-out films in a single day, I hadn't gotten us tickets to Another Gay Movie, a raunchy sex-comedy take-off of American Pie, which was showing right after A Love To Hide. A poor decision on my part, as it would have given us the cheering up we sorely needed. Though personally, I left in great spirits since I had finally gotten my hands on my official ImageOut Festival Volunteer badge. On a side note, it was a great feeling leaving the packed Little 1 theater and stepping outside to see a line of people waiting to get into the next film stretching from the front doors and wrapping all the way around the building.

For the future:
I'm introducing Go West on Tuesday, though I don't think I'm staying to watch the film.

Wednesday a group of us are going to see Coffee Date, a fun little comedy about the friendship between a straight man and the gay guy he's mistakenly set up with on a blind date. Your ticket stub gets you a discount on coffee and desserts at Equal=Grounds, so I want to head over there for a bit after the movie.

Matt, Molly, and I are planning to buy tickets to East Side Story on Thursday night. Anyone who wants to join us is more than welcome.

Friday Matt and I are seeing sold out showings of Puccini For Beginners, a lesbian romantic comedy, and Shortbus, director James Cameron Mitchell's (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a MooovieFest alumni) dramedy about sex and love which features unsimulated hardcore sex (!). It should be an interesting viewing experience to say the least :-P. It's supposed to be fantastic though.

I splurged and bought Matt and I tickets to the Saturday Closing Night screening of Queens, a comedy about the first gay weddings in Spain. Tickets include admission to the Closing Night Party & Gala Reception at Village Gate. The party should be amazing; it's theme is "a gay wedding" and there's going to be food, music, dancing, a silent auction, and a cash bar.

If anyone wants me to get them tickets for any of the upcoming films, leave a comment and I will get back to you ASAP.
