Right. Based on half-memories of having a similar problem two years ago when I built the system, I correctly diagnosed and corrected the problem. It turns out that either the spare cable or the spare graphics port of my power supply are fatally broken. In order to minimize testing time, I changed both variables, and the system works again!

I would sharpie in a note to myself about the broken power port, but it seems a shame to power down and disassemble the system again now that it's going. Instead, when next I upgrade a few years from now, I'll trust myself to infer the status of things based on the unconventional wiring currently going on inside the case.
