"Police do not have the right to arbitrarily detain.."
Wow..this guy is proper old school. I had nearly forgotten that we had principles like that way back in the mists of time.
It's all very well him spouting all that wishy washy stuff, but if cops are not allowed to behave how they wat; how are they expected to do the bidding of worldwide governments and trans national corporations?
If you allow us to go back in time to the dark ages of the principle of innocent until proven guilty and the like, and you open up a whole host of problems. Next thing someone will be saying that torturing suspects that we know to be terrorists is morally wrong and counterproductive! And we DO know that they are terrorists. How? Urr..Take it from me we know! We just....know. Yeah...thats it.
As much of a breath of fresh air this is, I still worry for the future. For as long as ANYONE in the western world believes that cutting back on liberties is a nessesary price to pay for the illusion of safety, I worry for the future. The war to preserve civil liberties is a war without end. There are always people (mainly rich and powerful people) who seek to change it.
I really liked hearing this. But unfortunately it doesn't seem to have changed much of anything. I really expected more of a public outcry here. But there's still a lot of people that think the police actually did a good job in a "difficult situation".
Two billion dollars spent. And what exactly did Toronto get out of all this? (Other than a not so subtle reminder that the police can pretty much do whatever they want)
