Between the catholic church's handling of the child abuse cases and this article:
http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/12/03/bo-tax-backlash/ , I'm becoming convinced that no group, no matter how good they claim their cause is, has any sort of real moral superiority to the average person. And, in fact, moral high ground is merely something people claim to to get what they want. Or maybe I'm just cynical.
A friend asked me what the worst defects of character are, in my opinion. I answered selfishness and hypocrisy. He then asked what the corresponding virtues would be, and I said empathy and integrity. It took a lot of thinking, but those are what I value most in a person. The times I have been hurt most in my life, it was by someone showing a lack of those. I wish that I knew more people who display those qualities. I wish I knew anyone at all in Canadian politics who does.
