This morning I had one of the most terrifying experiences in recent memory.
Puppy Jack and I were coming home from a walk at the park across the street when we saw a dog get run over. Her owner had just pulled into the driveway and let her out and she apparently wanted to come see Jack. She got just past the middle of the street and stopped. It was one of those moments when time stands still. Her owner screamed, I was vaguely aware of a car coming...but not slowing down.
A thud accompanied by a loud yelp.
The car stopped. I memorized the license plate number.
The dog limped over to her owner, who promptly carried her back to the driveway. The car took off.
Jack and I went over to try and help. The lady asked me to open the car door, which I did. I gave her the license plate number and made sure she knew where the nearest vet was. It didn't feel real...
I took Jack back in the house and put him in his kennel. I tried to explain to him the importance of staying out of the road, but I don't think he understood. I went back to leave my contact info on the lady's door and later learned that the dog(Lola) was going to be ok, just some sutures and broken bones, but I was pretty shaken up for most of the day.
It's scary how a tiny decision(or lack thereof) can cause such suffering. It really illustrates the importance of mindfulness.
