Male Companion on Doctor Who?

Feb 10, 2012 04:34

Just read this on Tumblr:

Smith says he starts rehearsing season seven episodes on February 13 and starts filming on February 20. He also reveals that he “wouldn’t mind a male companion now that Karen has left.” Of course, considering how close we are to the start of filming, you would sort of think Smith must have some idea who the next companion ( Read more... )

YES! Glad you agree! I agree 100% with all you added!
And good point on the Moff's writing prowess re women..
Irene Adler in Sherlock was brilliant but maybe that was more performance than writing? As they said in the commentary, she could have come across as really cold and unlikeable so they needed someone like Lara to bring playfulness and vulnerability to the role so that we could relate to her and understand Sherlock's respect for her etc.
Hopefully he gets help writing his next female character since the mother saving the day in the Christmas ep felt really iffy coming from him!
Definitely have a lot of respect for the ol' Moff though - he is a sweetie at heart, he just doesn't seem to quite "get" writing women.
I'm excited though, whatever happens. My main concern is that things brighten up a bit like how it was in S1, 2 and 5 - no incongruous dark series arcs to ruin an otherwise pretty much flawless show. It can handle dark moments - they span the genres and themes - but the tone is always very Doctor Who and it loses that when they take themselves too seriously and get TOO dark in my opinion.

But indeed, if the next companion even CONSIDERS kissing the Doctor I think I may scream. It's getting too much. I'm not a prude and sure the Doctor is attractive and everything but surely he can appreciate just ONCE having someone around who isn't attracted to him!
Though admittedly if it's a male companion next I wouldn't be averse to a bit of innocent mistaken "We're not a couple"ing a la Donna/Doctor / John/Sherlock (because frankly this caters to my slashy perversions rather nicely), but I'm on a mission to find shows (make them myself in the future hopefully!) which don't focus on romantic relationships and show that you CAN do things on your own, be independent and it's not necessarily a bad thing to want to be successful and happy without NEEDING someone in a ~romantic capacity. It doesn't have to be taken to extremes, you can still HAVE relationships and friends and stuff but I'm sick of there ALWAYS having to be some sort of love interest in EVERYTHING and the character (usually a woman)'s individual goals and aspirations, sense of self and being are put aside because the writers think that a relationship/love story is all they need to make their story interesting and realistic. And if they DO have a life outside of ~finding love it feels really forced.
This rant isn't especially relevant to Doctor Who because the companions ARE all strong women in their own right but I just feel their strength is trivialised when they all fancy the Doctor etc.
Which is a big factor of why Donna was so refreshing! Fantastic in every other way of course but I liked that she could just be his mate, not want to mate! (ahh references)
So I agree we should have something like this next, male or female if they figure out some way of having women get a look-in.

Anyway, sorry for the long reply! Thank you for responding - tres bon :)
And YES Doctor/companion hugs are ALWAYS NECESSARY
I am excited for a new BFF to be introduced! ♥

P.S. Sorry for not replying sooner - haven't been on LJ for so long, haven't been in the habit of checking my e-mail!

I think that Moffat is well-intended when he writes women, but more often than not they seem a little off. Like...they're independent until a man comes along. It's a shame, because he has some great ideas and dialogue.

I would love for there to be a gay/otherwise queer companion with no attraction to the Doctor. That would be my ideal situation, just bros-in-space.

If you like crime dramas, have you seen Whitechapel? It isn't based around romantic relationships at all, although it does have an unfortunate dearth of female characters. It treats the ones it has with respect, though, whether they're doctors or prostitutes, which is incredibly rare on television.

I'm just excited for some good Who, though. It can't come soon enough!

I agree totally - good summation.

Yeah that would be lovely. I am so excited for a new character and to get all up in their story! I adore Amy and Rory but I feel we need someone new to shake things up! I just want the Ponds to be happy and settled, being adorable and safe!

Ooh my mum has been recording and hasn't watched it yet so I'll get in on the viewing! My sister and I wanted to watch actually just because it has the flawless probation worker from Misfits in haha
Will definitely watch it - thank you for the recommendation, it sounds right up my street :)
Have you seen Harry's Law? I am constantly astounded by how perfect it is for me! Strong but flawed, interesting women, perfectly executed moral ~lessons, lots of laughs, some romance but an entirely acceptable amount! I really recommend it!

YES YES!! I hope the series split doesn't make Moff think he has to do something incredibly dramatic and ~epic again. I know we have stuff set up he needs to follow through on but hopefully he just gets it over with with as little fuss as possible. I have endless love for the cracks in time arc but that was beautiful angst with a happy ending, not evil!Doctor or whatever it is he has planned!
I am a simple soul and all I need is heart-warming and banter frankly!
