Start the Week with GREATNESS!

Nov 22, 2011 01:36

I'd been thinking for a while but especially the last couple of weeks about whether I'm capable of utilising the kind of mediums I enjoy to convey political, sociological and humanitarian views and.. messages? I guess? rather than straight-up essay-writing and discussions. And listening to the programme below on the radio freaked me out a bit because it's EXACTLY what I needed to hear! A discussion about "how the arts tackle politics and current affairs"!

I really recommend listening to it - click here for the podcast page where you can download or listen again - all the past episodes are there too so I assume this one'll be available for a long while too which is great!

I was starting to worry because many films, books, poetry, lyrics etc. that I have appreciated in the past, I've only understood a lot of the subtext and "messages" afterwards via articles, essays, discussion etc. so it made me think that maybe writing fiction won't get my point across fully and maybe I'd need to write clear essays elucidating my points or do something like Stephen Fry (HERO)'s podgrams so that it's more obvious what I'm talking about and clearer to understand and take things from. But now I see that even visual art doesn't have to be so hard to interpret and art in general doesn't always have to be so cryptic. It's just finding the right way to do it.
Marina Diamandis (HERO numero dos) said: "I think art is about challenging the way each person thinks - that's all it is. It's not telling people how to think or about being famous, it's just about challenging people's perceptions, and if I manage to do that then great!"
I'm feeling very positive right now! On an exclusion diet to find out what foods might be making me ill and been sticking rigidly to it (partly by wearing inspiring nail varnish..) and generally feeling very sanguine re the future!
