I got tagged by savoytruffle and tkp to list my top five favourite fics. I’m excited to do this even though I always have a difficult time narrowing things down and from what people have said I know this will be especially tricky.

1. It’s Not - (7,800 words, R overall, NC-17 in one chapter, Spike/Xander)
This is the fic I’m the most proud of because it’s the one in which I really challenged myself, especially in terms of style and theme - and I actually like how it turned out. It’s set a couple of years post-Chosen with Xander in Cleveland and asks the question “What if life turns out to be ordinary and boring for Xander after Sunnydale?”
2. The Other Replacement - (2,330 words, R, Spike/Xander)
This is one of my earliest fanfics, so there are aspects to it that I wouldn’t do now, but it’s probably the fic I had the most fun writing (seriously, I giggled while writing parts of it, which I probably shouldn’t admit!). Written for entrenous88’s ‘The Replacement’ Celebration -- A Two Xanders Are Better Than One Brouhaha!. The events of “The Replacement” from the perspective of the suave Xander, with different results. It’s suave Xander’s viewpoint that I’m particularly proud of, and why it’s a favourite.
3. Xander 2.0 - (1,127 words, PG, Xander & Buffy)
Despite being an S/X shipper one of my favourite things to write is Xander and Buffy scenes, so I loved writing this friendship piece that’s set during “Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered” (it’s like a missing scene). This has a special place in my heart because I feel that it explores Xander’s various feelings towards Buffy, and to me, says a lot about why their friendship is so special.
4. What You Didn’t Know You Needed - (368 words, PG-13, Xander/Dawn)
This is such a short little fic, but is one that I knew I would include on this list. It’s basically a moment, post-Chosen, in which Xander and Dawn reconnect. This is special to me because this story flowed out of me while I was sitting at my very ill grandpa’s bedside, and even though the story’s very different than that experience, I feel that I somehow captured the mood of that time.
5. Surprises - (1,541 words, PG, Giles/Xander)
Other than the first fic, the stories on this list - including this one - were relatively easy for me write (ie. I wrote them in one sitting and didn’t agonize over them for months on end). I really enjoyed writing in Giles’ POV and exploring the potential of a Giles/Xander relationship in a post-Chosen setting. I wrote this for savoytruffle so there’s many things in it just for her (but I feel you don’t have to be her to enjoy the fic), and I self-indulgently included a reference to the Faerie Queene - and it makes me happy every time I read it.
So I had to include an honourable mention, and it’s one of my very few Veronica Mars fics:
Afterglow - (1,059 words, R, Logan/Weevil)
I’m so proud of the style of the piece and the way that Logan/Weevil interact. Often when I’m watching a TV show I’ll read a slash story into the subtext, and in this fic I actually wrote that story - and I’m very happy with how it turned out. It’s set during “Rashard and Wallace Go to White Castle” and “Ain't No Magic Mountain High Enough", in season two.
And because I’m devious I wanted to include a couple of my favourite drabbles:
Pink - (Giles/Xander, G)
I adore when Xander’s mom offers him and Giles fruit punch in “The Initiative” (season 4), so I had such fun playing with that moment and bringing out the slashiness more.
Countdown - (Xander/Cordy, PG)
I LOVE Xander/Cordy, they’re my favourite canon pairing, so I just had a blast writing this drabble. It’s set season two, and Xander is thinking about him and Cordy.
