"Bones" was super jolly, all the close leaning and "He put his creepy serial killer hands on me..." I liked "Earl" okay, just happy to see Joy back, but you're right, it wasn't their best work. "The Office" rocked it - Marketed Gaydar? I was laughing out loud.
Oh! I love "He put his creepy serial killer hands on me..." - that totally cracks me up! And the close leaning was excellent - Booth and Brennan really do have great chemistry. And I also adore Angela and Hodgins. *g*
It's funny because I love Joy but it wasn't the best episode. Of course nothing can top the lawn mower beauty pageant one! I think it would have been better to start the season with an Earl and Randy focused episode.
Oh god, the Gaydar was so hysterical! And everyone's reactions to Oscar being gay were so perfectly in character. I loved the looking at gay porn scene too!
It turns out that they aired the SECOND episode of the new season instead of the season premiere! Is it entirely evil of me that I think that's kinda funny?
Actually it is kinda funny. I'm particularly amused that it never occurred to me that there was a missing episode. I do recall being a bit baffled at some of the previously ons, but I just attributed that to my bad memory. Grey's is a show I love, but don't rewatch the way I do something like VM. Now that I've seen the actual premiere episode, which was good, I think the second episode is better so I'm not upset that we got to see it first. *g*
It's not a show I watch, so I'm just sitting here bemused by the whole thing. Now if it had been Buffy or Veronica Mars, I would be up in arms. Oh yes.
I think the second episode is better so I'm not upset that we got to see it first. Ah, so it worked out well for you, then. :D
Oh man, if it had been Buffy or Veronica Mars I would have been so upset. I'm sure that huge Grey's fans are really outraged - from the article it sounds like they are. Oh, and Grey's is a surprisingly good show so if you're ever looking for something to rent on DVD, it's definitely worthwhile. It gets particularly good in the second season.
It did work out well. I'm not too upset about seeing them out of order. I think that the second episode was more satisfying and provided more resolution. *g*
The season premiere of The Office was pure gold! And not just because it was hilarious in parts but also because it tackled a serious subject, handled it well - and it made fun of homophobes rather than homosexuals.
and it made fun of homophobes rather than homosexuals. I definitely agree!!! It made me love the show more because of how skillfully they dealt with the issue. The whole buying of gaydar was so hysterical! And they did such a good job of showing why Oscar would *not* want to be outed in that environment; it was just neat to see that explored on a TV. And that moment at the end with Michael musing about Oscar's "roommate" was so poignant and suggested so much about people's obliviousness to queerness even if they know someone's gay.
The roommate thing ties into last season when Dwight went to Oscar's house to bust him for having a sick day when he wasn't sick - and being completely oblivious to the signs that Oscar was gay and that his roommate was his lover.
While watching Season Two, I was discussing the number of gay people on TV - having lost quite a few to cancelled shows in the last few years. And I think on network TV in the U.S. there were two: Andrew on "Desperate Housewives" and Oscar on "The Office". And I said it was a pity the two gay men on TV in America were - in Andrew's case, evil; and in Oscar's case, in the closet.
Now that Oscar is out - and just as normal and "boring" as the rest of the cast of characters - at least there's one gay man to be proud of on television.
The roommate thing ties into last season when Dwight went to Oscar's house to bust him for having a sick day when he wasn't sick - Oh yes, I do recall that and enjoyed that continuity! I do think it's especially poignant because even after Michael knows that Oscar's gay, it still doesn't occur to him that Oscar's "roommate" could be his partner.
at least there's one gay man to be proud of on television. One. It's very sad, isn't it? After wracking my brain for other queers on TV, I recalled that Grey's Anatomy has a recurring gay character (in a minor role as the bartender - but a positive portrayal). And other than the L Word, I can't think of any queer women on TV (although there are Ellen and Rosie O'Donnell on daytime TV). I'd love for there to be a major queer character on Veronica Mars or Battlestar Galactica (although I think I read somewhere that it was unlikely on BSG).
Yeah, I thought "Earl" was ok but not a big splash for a premiere. Mike's favorite moment was Randy singing without helium. He was fairly sure that was a writer's room moment. "The Office" made us wonder if this was the result of the creators spending their summer reading slash...
I know, especially because it's such a popular show! I had to give a couple of friends a heads up about it.
Oh! I loved Randy singing without the helium too - and I think Mike's right about it being a writer's room moment. I believe I was saying above that I think the premiere would have been stronger if Earl & Randy were more central (and I say this as a huge fan of Joy).
heee! That would be awesome if the episode was inspired by slash. Especially because I was hearing recently that there was some anti-slash comments in the Office fandom (how crappy is that considering how smart the show is?). And it was such a good episode, very skillfully exploring the issue and making fun of homophobes.

I'm afraid I read very little TV news, both for lack of time and also wanting to avoid spoilers, so we were both wondering if the Joy goes to jail storyline was in there because of actor commitments or just as a new storyline idea (which could be intriguing) or if they're going to forget about it next week. So I'm guessing that the first ep dealt with her for more meta reasons because I agree that Earl and Randy are really at the heart of the show and those storylines tend to be the strongest.

Actually I could see it because I suspect the show draws its fanbase from some very different groups, some of which would have no longtime experience with fandoms in general and for whom slash
( ... )
so we were both wondering if the Joy goes to jail storyline was in there because of actor commitments or just as a new storyline idea (which could be intriguing) Oh! That hadn't occurred to me, but I'm sure you're right. I'd guess it's the latter because I haven't heard anything about the actress leaving the show (I try to avoid spoileres but that is something I'd likely hear). Also she was nominated for an Emmy and presented with Jason Lee at the ceremony so I think she's pretty permanent on the show. That makes sense that they'd start with this episode if they're planning a storyline around it.
Yeah, I often forget that newer shows will have people new to fandom. And they'll often be focused on the main pairing (which is understandable, I love Jim/Pam) so therefore are not as into or versed in slash. Yeah, I thought the Office did a good job of dealing with the issue.
Yes! Ed Helms!! I was so excited!!!! Definite squee. *g* And yay for Nate Corddry too!
Me too! I'm very excited. I actually won't get to see the first episode right away because I'll be visiting Camisha - so fortunately I'll be having lots of fun so I won't be sad about the delay.
