Yes, I guess that was Dean's oblique "I'm stuffed, so please intuit from this that I need your help" moment. But the thing I was thinking of was when he prayed to Cas, and outright stated, "I really need your help." It was quite shocking, as I recall, because those words sat so oddly on his lips. So the thought of him saying that to Sam - being so real, dropping both the macho pose and the need to be the parent/big brother supporter and protector of Sam - I'm thinking that could be a game changer.

I love what you're saying here about being together and being alone. I think a lot of us fell in love with that brotherly communication and understanding in S1, and yet, even then they were coming at things from such different viewpoints. They have such different experiences of life; it's a point Sam has made again and again, (Dark side of the moon, for example, and again, recently, when he explained that the bunker wasn't 'home' for him) and yet it's something Dean fails to grasp. Just thinking now: It's possibly his greatest flaw - a lack of imagination. He couldn't imagine another life for himself other than being part of John, Sam and Dean; he can't imagine a different perception of family than the one he thinks he shares (but really doesn't) with Sam.
