Seven deadly sins, White Collar and writing question

Mar 29, 2011 11:13

I suspect the fact that I was supposed to do these seven deadly sins over the period of one week, and here I am probably 20 days later finally getting around to 'Sloth' will provide anyone who glances this way with a fair representation of how I am in the Sloth Department.

I am all for Slow Foods movement, but why stop there? Why not Slow Work? Slow Response Time? Slow Bill Paying? Slow Departure from Cinemas because I *want* to watch the credits, dammit!

No, seriously, tell me one thing that is better done quickly. Food? No. Drinking? No. Sex? Hell no! If I have a brain surgeon hovering over me, scalpel poised, I don't want her operating like a crazed ferret on speed. I want her to slowly, carefully survey my cerebellum before deciding whether or not to carve out those five years I spent disguised as a bi-curious army chaplain in glittergirl combat fatigues hidden in a bush outside Sarajevo*. I mean, who wants to lose those good times just because the woman carving into your brain is in a rush? Slow down, babe. Admire the view.

I came back from Merkka in July last year, and I have only just emptied out the bag I took. So what? Who was harmed by that? Why does my sister roll her eyes at the news?

Sloth isn't a sin, it's a lifestyle choice. It's paying proper respect to the zen of the moment. And the couch. The Zen of the Prostrate. (Note the R there, folks. I run a clean house, I do).**

Right, that's all you get for Sloth. I can't be buggered writing any more.

On to other things... have re-discovered White Collar. Bought the S1 DVD and have thoroughly enjoyed it, now watched all of S2. Oddly enough, Matt Bomer is absolutely delicious and he does nothing for me. Nothing. Not even when I slap him a little. I see The Pretty, but no bells ring. Tim DeKay is more appealing to me (and please tell me he was called Tooth all through high school. Or Dental? Dent? Maybe Urban. Surely). I really liked him as Jonesy in Carnivale, and I adore his relationship with Elizabeth, his wife, here. Who knew I would ever find anything remotely likable about Tiffani Thiessen? It's all witty, light, non-violent, lovely bromance with a dark edge (trust issues, trust issues - waaaah!!).

I do find it funny that several little bits of business from Due South (hello Jeff King, producer of both) have found their way here. Hero peering closely at something on a woman's shapely chest, eventually commenting on the piece while partner looks on in disgust - check. ('Very beautiful - leather' (DS - a bustier). 'Beautiful - work.' (WC - a necklace)). Hero jumping on horse and riding through urban park in pursuit of baddie? Check. Mafia guy asking police to investigate a robbery from his local church? Check.

It made me wonder what themes or ideas repeat themselves in my work. And I think what comes up regularly are secrets (about identity, mostly, but also misapprehension about actions) and redemption. Forgiveness is a big one with me. Oh, and of course, The Whump. But more often it's psychological whumping.

So I wondered, all you other writers out there - what themes/ recurring images do you find creeping into your work?

*This is a lie. That's not a real example. But if I *had* been there, done that, I would want to remember. I *did* get arrested for spying in Iran.
** This is clearly another lie.
