Evolution: Evidence and "Gaps"

I am not the original author of this piece. The true credit goes to ZomgItsCriss on youtube, so if you'd rather here these words from an attractive woman sitting on her bed, here's the link. I thought she was brilliant in her presentation and thus transcribed it so it can exist on the 'net in another format, granting more people access. For the ( Read more... )

"For most of [the Creationists,] accepting that all the life there is today came about through a natural process...takes God out of the picture."

This is a very good argument against 7 day creation fundamentalists whose religion denies science. That sort of thing is easy, or at least, very possible, to disprove. I suppose I don't like the title "creationists," then, because of the way it lumps me (roman catholic) together with them. Both of us believe in creation, but in radically different ways, and for radically different reason. If your religion denies science, then one of them isn't true, clearly, and it doesn't seem to be science. But what would you say to a religion that co-exists with and back up the facts put forward by science, and doesn't fear it, but encourages it's growth? Even if such a religion called itself "creationist," I mean. I'm saying this because I do believe in a creator, but evolution doesn't threaten me at all. I think it's a fantastic theory that explains things beautifully, and because the bible isn't a textbook, I see no reason why God didn't decide to create only the first step of the chain, for it to evolve towards what we are today.

The bottom line is that I'm glad to see more evidence for evolution, and evolution more clearly explained, and it doesn't shake anything that I believe--rather, it backs it up. I love what she says about evolution being a natural process, but the God that I believe in works primarily through natural processes, ones that he set in motion. So a natural process wouldn't, to me, rule him out at all--it would be more of a "yeah, that sounds like the way he usually works." sort of a feel. Does that make sense?

P.S. have you read Unequally-yoked.com? It's an atheist blog, but the author has a catholic boyfriend. She's respectful, and very intelligent, and I think does a good job helping the two sides of the coin at least understand each other better.
