Kindergarten Blues

Well, that was an upsetting drop-off. As I'm taking LG to the door of the school, this little boy was FREAKING out. He was just screaming and crying and reaching for his mom, while this other teacher was using all her might to pull him off away from his mother It took both LG and I by surprise. We had to walk around the skirmish. It was just so sad to see so much misery in such a little body.

As I pulled away, the mom was still standing there, in the cold, watching them drag her little boy down the hallway. I'm sure she was dying. I would have been.

In other news, LG's flaky kindergarten teacher has fucked the year up but good. First, she decided she wanted an extra six weeks of maternity leave, so the kids had a sub the first six weeks of school. Not ideal. They just get used to one routine, and here comes an entirely new person. But the transition actually wasn't so bad when she came back in October.

Now she writes us a typo-filled letter saying that she's decided to leave again--which leaves everyone scrambling for yet another substitute. She may or may not come back in March. This is not good. Kindergarten teachers loom big in the 5 year-old pysche. Kids need stability, and having 3-4 transitions just really sucks. I mean, I remember having subs, and it always sucked--they don't know your name, they don't know the rules, etc.

And yes, I sympathize with her dilemma as a working mother. But that doesn't mean you get to repeatedly flake out, and fuck with a roomful of other kids. As Stephen Colbert would say, pick a side!
