Barbara Brand rifled through the black sports bag, seizing a pair of skinny jeans and holding them up, waiting for the excuse. Russell shrugged.
"I've gotta have something to wear when I get papped coming out of the hospital."
She sighed, putting her hand over his.
"Russell. You will feel a lot thinner after you've had the baby, but I'm not quite sure if you'll be able to get into those jeans yet."
He groaned.
"I know. I just want to kid myself that I'll just snap right back."
"There's no saying that you won't, Russell. But it may take a few weeks of being back in your normal routine."
He sat down on the bed.
"I just..." He trailed off, trying to find the words, "I know that the way my body looks is meaningless. I know it's just a form, a vehicle for my personality, and it'll still work fine... But I don't want to be fat, Mum. Never again."
Barbara said nothing, enveloping her son in a hug.

Noel stepped into the dimly lit bedroom, and rushed to Russell, who was sat on the bed, his head bent over his spherical stomach, his shoulders heaving with thick sobs.
"Russell, what's wrong? Are you in pain?!"
