I just saw the Neighborhood Emergency Services Team (NEST) training video; it was so bloody and gory! It was awesome (except the parts with the GSW's). I just found out from the Safety Services director, Cris, that the IRRI med team won the Filipino Red Cross First Aid competition and a string of interesting international awards. I hope I don't feel too stupid when I go with them. Cris is letting me prick people (which is probably a bad idea; I'm not sure how I could have put that euphemistically). I hope I don't have to stab them three times to hit a vein (like some people that I have met). The best part about all of this is that there would be absolutely no way that any medical team would let me do all of this stuff in the U.S.! Me--little ole Penny without an hour of medical training--playing doctor, nurse, pharmacist, and lab technician in one. I CAN'T BELIEVE that I'll get to prescribe meds, stick needles into people, and diagnose simply ailments. AHHHHHH!!!!! What is the world coming to? Plus, the barangay (village) we're going to is providing lunch for us all. How much better can it get--I mean free scrumptious food (or not).
