neil - what can i say? you're amazing, i respect you oh so much. I have never taken a trip across the whole country before, but i have been to many places through out and i really do agree, "if you show respect and just a genuine attitude towards them, they reciprocate."
I used to "hate" rochester. i used to think it was so boring and such. I don't know what happened, i kind of feel like i just got older, but i've come to figure some things out. i don't hate this place, in fact, i love it. sure, it has it's problems, but we are so lucky to live here. i go on a walk just about anywhere, at any time, and feel safe doing so. that isn't something that i can do just anywhere. I'm going to be moving for the first time in my entire life in just a few days, to detroit. i'm sure i'll have the time of my life, but i'm also sure that i will find more things to love about this place in my absence.
as for some of your questions... i do think that even though we complain so much about rochester, if we were to be just about anywhere else, we would do the same. we just need a different perspective. i think one of the biggest complaints about this place is that it's boring. think about it, isn't it a bit odd to expect a place to keep us entertained.
can we overcome the flaws of our humanity, and still remain human? - I think so, but it think it will be hard. i got a shirt this summer, it says, "we are the ones we've been waiting for." it was from this band, lost and found. they were the band and speakers at this festival (bass lake) that kathy and i went to. and one of their big points was that we don't have to and we shouldn't wait around for things and people to change, we are the people to change it. they had us do an exercize where we got into different groups and came up with ideas how we can work to be more welcoming, more tolarant, how we can work to have a cleaner environment and world peace. just things that we can do individually. it was quite intense to see about 300 or so high school kids do this and to hear some of the things that we came up with. i think that our humanity can do a lot to fix our humanity
Can we live a better way? Can we extinguish the worlds fire without extinguishing ourselves? yes and yes. the biggest thing is that we have got to want it and be active about it. just like anything, i can want say a car all i want, but if i simply want it, passivly, and make no effort to achive it, i won't ever get it. i think that we don't think that we, as individuals, can work for any of these concepts because we think of them on a much larger scale. we are overwhelmed and think that we are helpless to the cause. we don't have to do big great things to make an impact. small things have an impact as well. and people may follow our lead because they see that they can do these things as well. eventually, we may be able to move on to doing those big things, but that kind of work isn't for everybody and that is another thing we need to recognize.
Will love rule? yes, it always has and it always will.
Am I a pretentious and fucking psuedo-drunken dumb-shit? - as far as i can tell, no. you are genuine
sorry about the length, i guess i had something to say. i hope you don't mind me sharing my opinions.
