Adventures in DJing

Here I am at Trainwreck last Friday, annoyed that my set was bumped back (again) so some choad could play a 7-minute track of backwards masking. (One expects a bit of sexism in this sort of endeavor, but I thought it'd be more of a condescending or come-on sort, not the "I'm not giving up the decks and I'm bigger than you" variety.) I ended up closing out the night, which actually wasn't so bad since my set was more downtempo (and was actual) music, and got some compliments on a good closeout set. I even had a fan/booth troll, who kept telling me he went to ska shows but was too drunk to tell me where they were, and made orgasm noises at the beginning of every track I played. Even though it took a good deal of caffeine to get me through the night and every smoker in the joint wanted to sit right beside me, I had fun.

For the curious:
"Bam Bam"- Sister Nancy
"My Baby is Gone"- Delroy Wilson
"Don't Touch Me Tomato"- Phyllis Dillon
"Aily and Ailaloo"- Max and Niney
"Another Ride"- The Sexy Girls
"Iron Wolf"- The Upsetters
"Perfidia"- Phyllis Dillon
My 15 minutes were up by this time, but no one had told me to stop, so I put on "Ashanti Ganja Dub" by Leslie Butler.

Then Saturday night we saw The Wailers. That was amazing. The vibes were quite pleasant at that show, and it was neat to see other fans out.

This shouldn't be news, but I'm getting to be quite the fan of reggae music. I've been doing a good deal of research and making a focused effort to educate myself. I've started to build a bit of collection of (old school) dub, reggae, and now ska. I've got some ideas and hopefully some avenues to express them on the horizon.
