Happy Easter, everyone! I'm chock full of champagne, breakfast food and chocolate lava cake, and ready for a nap, but first, an update.
Friday night was a good music night, in that
without_me,
aproposofnothin and I took in Tony Lucca's showcase and a Better than Ezra show. Had to wait for 20 minutes outside the Viper Room to get into Tony Lucca's show, so we were all a bit soggy, but it was good fun. Jessa entertained us while waiting by sharing selected excerpts from the "The Chronic-WHAT-cles of Narnia" rap, East Coast version and West Coast response. I hope the people around us were as amused as we were. N and I both kept thinking we saw Christian Kane waiting to get into the show (it wasn't), so I guess that shows where my brain is these days. Those WB boys are everywhere.
After dealing with a Nazi-Soup- Kitchen-esque bouncer ("give me your name and stop there!") who was sporting a pink umbrella with black skulls-and-crossbones on it (??? - I love WeHo), we got into the gig. Tony played a six or seven song set ("Melancholy Collar," "Death of Me," "Two Trains," "New York City," and a couple of other newer songs), including closing with a gorgeous cover of "A Case of You," which made A's night. Tony also announced he has secured a distribution deal for his next record, which should drop around August, so, good news. The boy needs to shave, but aside from that, it was a lovely show.
Quick congratulatory hugs to Tony, and A, N and I were off to see the Better than Ezra show down the street at the House of Blues. Our cab driver was a bit peeved to have to drive us the mere .7 miles from one venue to the other, but yo, it was raining pretty hard, and my umbrella died an ugly death in the interim, so Mr. driver man just had to deal. Turns out we needn't have rushed -- BtE didn't go on until after 11, but that gave us time to hang out on a comfy sofa, chat, and grab some food and drinks, plus I got to touch base briefly with Tom, BtE's bassist, who I had not talked to in years, so the extra time was good. I highly doubt he actually remembered me (since our college days are looooonng past), but it was nice to say hello and chat a little. And damn, Tom looks good these days. Short hair suits him.
BtE put on a great 90 minute set. We knew we were at the right show, however, when Kevin started singing "the Chronic-WHAT-cles of Narnia" in the middle of the bridge of "King of New Orleans." I really need to track that rap down, apparently, as it was all over my night last night. I know that fandom has taken over my brain, however, since during "King of New Orleans" (one of my favorite BtE songs ever) the thing that kept running through my mind is that
traveller, who is currently writing some of my favorite "Supernatural" fic, also wrote an utterly incredible LotRPS fic called "King of New Orleans." I don't think I'll ever hear that BtE song again without thinking of that fic, since it ripped my heart out in the best way when I read it,and totally captured the feel of that song.
Saturday was mellllllllllow, just relaxing, catching up on TV, and getting in a good workout, during which I fell in total and complete love with Kane's "Live in London" album. I so cannot wait to see those guys perform live next weekend. Sometime between now and Friday, I need to purchase a digital camera. Anyone have any recommendations for such things, for a person who has zero camera skills or knowledge whatsoever?
Today was church with the family, followed by a leisurely, two-hour champagne brunch on the beach, complete with sunny skies and a wonderful ocean breeze. Now, it's nap time. Life does not suck.
