To: The Students of Carleton University
From: David Dunn, Chair of the Board of Governors

I want to take this opportunity to inform you of some changes to the leadership of Carleton University which are important for students to know.

Dr. David W. Atkinson, who has served as President and Vice Chancellor of the University since August 2005, has announced that he is resigning as President, effective immediately.

The Board of Governors has accepted his resignation in the best interests of the University. I believe that it is vitally important that the Board of Governors and the President be aligned on the issues and on the relationship necessary to move forward in a cohesive way.

Dr. Atkinson has had a number of accomplishments in his brief tenure as President, particularly his engagement with the student body, and we sincerely wish him well.

It is vitally important that the progress Carleton University is making continues and that no disruption will occur in the educational experience of students at this fine institution.

To that end, Dr. Samy Mahmoud, the Acting Provost and Vice President (Academic) has been chosen by the Board as President and Vice-Chancellor Pro Tempore of Carleton University, pending a national search for the best candidate. A search firm will be hired to organize and launch the search for a replacement.

As a number of you may know, Dr. Mahmoud has considerable experience in senior executive leadership at Carleton University and elsewhere. The Board believes strongly that he will be able to guide Carleton through the next several months while the search process is underway.

Dr. Mahmoud has emphasized to me that he is looking forward to the opportunity to meet with students in the coming weeks and months, and I know you will join me in welcoming him to this important position.

Sincerely;

David Dunn
Chair
Board of Governors
Carleton University

Notice how his resignation was accepted "in the best interest of the university"... and how nowhere does it say "we are deeply saddened by the departure of Dr. Atkinson"
Why the push? because the Faculty almost went on strike? because of the bad press regarding the last place ranking in Maclean's? no one really cares...really.
Now because of some disagreement between the board and the Prez, more of my tuition money is being wasted on his severance pay, hiring a recruitment firm to search for a new pres, incentives and all expenses paid trips for potential new pres's.... Money well spent wouldn't you say so? Now you wonder why we're placed last.
