Seriously.

This is a bit of an odd update. It's not even 2 sentences in, and it's already taking a surprising turn. Let's get you all up to speed so you can fully appreciate my story:

I filled out a quiz thingymabob the other day.
I read over it, again.
A lot of my answers lack any real conviction, as they are riddled with sarcasm, fallacious remarks, and comedy.

I began to wonder if anyone really takes the serious answers seriously. I thought one of the answers was actually really good. Check it out:

x. Worst feeling in the world: Realizing there is nothing you can do to change what is about to happen. Why so complex? Well, for that split second, you're probably not thinking about the future, but the irreversible doom that is just in front of you, and how you can do NOTHING to stop it. BAM. No future? No hope. Pandora would be proud.

I thought that was quite a good answer. Now, if that were contained in between answers containing "your mom"s and remarks of arrogance and generally silly things, would you really pay attention? That's a gem that just kind of popped out, and I think it's very profound. I think it was specific enough to convey my intent, but also general enough to be open for interpretation, or at least it might take a bit of critical thinking to really plunge into what it means. Take a moment to read it for yourself, and digest what you can.

Done?

This is what it means to me. To put it bluntly, the worst feeling in the world is actual hopelessness. I believe that if there is time, there is hope. Suppose you dive into Doctor Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying, and Love the Bomb. It you haven't seen it, do so now before you read any further. We can look at it from a few angles.

Slim Pickens is going down with the ship. For all he knows, he's going down in his utmost patriotic duty. He's dying for his country, and he's having a ball. He is likely thinking about how his country will benefit from his actions.

Dr. Strangelove is crazy, for one, and is more likely thinking about the post-apocalyptic rebuild, where it was suggested that a ratio of 10 women per man is ideal to repopulate the world. It's possible that other men are thinking the same thing.

But what about if you're stuck in the next 5 minutes? or 30 seconds? If you're thinking about what could have been done to stop something that's already too late, you're not thinking about the future. For all you know, it's over at that crucial moment. The doomsday device is going to blow, and millions are going to die. That's the worst feeling in the world. I honestly can't imagine anything worse than that.

Honestly, I kind of got distracted, but you probably learned more about me from this little thing than any of the quizzes I've ever done.
