Have you noticed how although most of us are now grown up and at least in college and still no one writes from time to time about something of national or world importance? Something relevant to life nowadays?
I know I myself have not talked much about anything important, other than stuff about my life. However, the death of a clean-room technician about 2 weeks ago and the death of our supervisor's mother combined with the incredible Hurricane Katrina made me think about many things. Everyone knows it, but I feel like saying it again - we may be smart and technologically advanced and fight of hunger and disease, destroy nature, protect ourselves from predators, but when nature rises up, we are nothing. We are reduced to primitive creatures hanging on for life.
Hurricanes and tornadoes impress me and fascinate me. I am always excited when I hear about one in the Atlantic Ocean. I love following the satellite images and see the majesty that nature creates. However, it is always with sorrow once the hurricane nears land. But it seems like the nation was not ready enough for Katrina. Many people evacuated but thousands stayed behind. And after the devastation, rescue teams and the government could have mobilized a much larger rescue mission. I mean, we can send huge amount of money, supplies and people to help across the Indian Ocean during the Malaysian tsunami, or in Iraq and Afghanistan, but we cannot send everyone to the Gulf states in 2 days? It is radiculous! With the massive freeway network, helicopters and airplanes and people are still being pulled out about 2 weeks after the hurricane struck! Of course many would die after the hurricane hit!
I am just saddened by the government administration lately, regardless who is to blame or from what party. I know that both leading parties are greedy rich folks that only care to get our votes to win the election. National values have gone down the drain and it seems the country is slowly drifting in the wrong direction. I am not very knowledgeable on the issue, but I think that inflation growth rate has increased lately, as evident from the gas prices. What happens when gas prices increase? Transportation costs increase. Companies compensate by increasing product prices. We pay higher gas prices to fill up our car, then pay higher prices for whatever products. An increase in gas prices is basically speaking a double pay increase for us.
Life is still very good compared to most places in the world, but I am afraid that the current direction of the country is the wrong one and unless something is done soon, the future doesn't bring much hope. Schooling needs more federal funding, seniors need better health plans and Social Security benefits, inflation needs to be controlled, housing prices should be capped. I don't know how those should be done, but that's my opinion on what should be improved.
Right now I am working and glad I am earning money, so I still don't get too frustrated with prices of things, but in a matter of time I will have a family too and then I will pay attention and then I will get frustated.
