HW for Tuesday, May 23 - Explain Gene's comment on the last page of the novel: ... "I was on active duty all my time at school. I killed my enemy there. "

In the last page of the novel, when Gene is an adult returning to Devon school and reflecting on his memories there he makes a comment that The time he spent at Devin school he was fighting his own war. Although he was never actually drafted into World War II he still believed that he was fighting a war, against Finny here. Gene’s jealousy of Finny cased him to jostle the branch that day on the Elm, which eventually lead to Finny dying.
