Act Four

1. At this point of the play I am most concerned about what Liza will do once she finishes the bet with Higgins.

2. I thought that some of the most interest of Higgins remarks to Eliza was, ‘“You won my bet! You! Presumptuous insect!’’ I found this statement interesting because it was hard to believe that Higgins still treated Eliza so badly, even after she had gone through her transformation from a commoner to what seems like a well educated individual. One of the comments made by Eliza too Higgins was, ‘“I’m only a common ignorant girl and in my station I have to be careful. There can’t be any feelings between the like of you and the like of me…”’ I found this remark interesting because it indicates that Eliza might have feelings for Higgins.

3. I think that by Eliza saying, “’ I’ve got a little of my own back, anyhow”’ she means that she can take care of herself.

4. Eliza gets Higgins slippers for him because she is tired of hearing him complain over them. She throws them at him to show that she is frustrated that Higgins keeps complaining but does nothing to help solve the situation.

5. I believe that Higgins won the bet. Higgins won the bet because he was able to pass Eliza off and fool people so that they did not believe that she was a common flower girl, just as he said he would.

6. Pickering treats Eliza with respect while Higgins treats her as is she is not good enough for him and does not deserve t be respected.

7. In Act four of Pygmalion the ring is used a s a symbol. I think that to each of the characters, the ring seemed to be a symbol for their relationship, or the beginning of one.

8. In this day someone would not likely take a stranger into their home the way that Higgins did. This is because in today’s society things are much more complex than they used to be. For example the person allowing someone into their home would be much more concerned about the safety and danger that comes along with letting a stranger stay in your house.

Dear friend,
Today at the ball a very interesting situation occurred. Professor Higgins brought his new, adopter daughter with him to the ball. At first things seemed perfectly normal, but then the lady accompanying Higgins, Eliza began to speak with the strangest accent. She used so much slang that she could have been a common flower girl! Higgins reassured us that she was simply using the new form of small talk.
Later that evening we met Nepomuck, an interpreter who could speak a total of 32 different languages. He could also place any man in Europe according to their dialect. This man claimed that Eliza, Higgins daughter was actually a Hungarian princess! Soon after Higgins cleared up the situation by explaining that Nepomuck was incorrect in his assumption. Overall, last night at the ball was a very interesting and unusual night.
