The ER.

No, not the hit television show!

Yesterday, I trained in the ER and I got to help my trainer do a registration in one of the trauma rooms where a baby had stopped breathing. It was so intense, but it was really exciting at the same time. The baby was fine by the time we got in, so we didn't see much action. But, my trainer told me that I should wait and see when all three of the trauma rooms are full and there's blood everywhere. And, for some reason, I didn't have a panic attack... I guess I'm not such a hypochondriac after all, seeing sick people really doesn't upset me as much as I thought it would.

But, today was a different story. I trained in Out-Patient Registration. They make "blue cards" for patients. It's a little card that has all their information like name, address, primary care physician, and insurance that all patients getting an out-patient procedure (endoscopy, xrays, mammograms, etc.) need. It was extremely slow today, so the time didn't fly by at all. And, since I am not familiar with any of the systems yet, I just sat there and watched. I got onto an unoccupied computer and just did some "eLearn" training and made some personal calls. There was an ice cream social too, so I got chocolate ice cream with butterfinger bars, chocolate syrup, sprinkles, nuts, whipped cream and cherries... it was really, really good.

I'm surprised that I don't really have nic-fits at all at work. Sometimes I really want a cigarette, but I don't get irritated or any of the physical symptoms. I'm also surprised at how many people smoke at Maine Medical Center, especially nurses.

So, tomorrow, another 8 hour day of Out-Patient Registration observation! Yay! At least on Friday my trainer is going to have me actually do some registrations! Then it's the weekend. I'm also going to have all of Pride weekend off!
