APPEARANCE: Ran Mouri is a tall, long-legged Japanese high-schooler with a soft face but powerful stature. She is more muscular than slim, as she is a regional karate champion. Her hair is long and chestnut-colored with her bangs swept to the side. Her blue eyes are large and expressive, and she is usually seen wearing either her school uniform or casual clothes.

PERSONALITY & HOUSE REQUESTS:
Ran is, above all, a generous and doting individual. She genuinely cares for those that she loves, and will not hesitate to put herself in the line of danger for their sake. Often this results her taking little consideration into what that entails, and how that effects those around her. She can be somewhat short-sighted and reckless, even if her motives are pure. Her driving motivation is her strong sense of loyalty. Once you have earned her loyalty, it is near-impossible to waver, even when all logic seems to point to a less savory reality. It is that loyalty that sees her through waiting years for her high school sweetheart Shinichi Kudo to return from whatever it is he's doing without any desire to stray.

The daughter of famed Inspector Kogoro Mouri has a strong sense of justice, having been raised by a former police inspector and grown up with an aspiring detective. She will speak up whenever she sees that something is not right, and she holds steadfast even in the most difficult times. Ran sincerely (and perhaps naively) believes that everyone is essentially a good person, and that criminals make the choice towards the path of crime. She has a hard time believing that people capable of killing someone could genuinely be capable of loving. This makes the murders of lovers in particular especially difficult for her to handle. Perhaps her outlook on human relationships is a bit idealized, but it is that ideal that makes her so caring and selfless.

Being a young woman with such strong convictions, Ran is prone to crying when her feelings become over-whelming. Several people have taken note of this, often in surprise at the vulnerability of an otherwise resilient and enduring individual. Ran has shed tears over several things, the most frequent of which being her childhood friend, Shinichi Kudo.

Ran is completely unaware that the young boy Conan Edogawa is in fact her shrunken friend and romantic interest. Well, maybe completely unaware isn't the best way to put it...Ran has had her suspicions over the years, but in addition to the fact that it's a rather absurd theory, Shinichi has gone to great lengths to throw Ran off of his scent, for fear of the harm that would befall her if she were to find out the truth behind his transformation and the Black Organization.

Since she has been taking care of her father and Conan for such a while, Ran has developed a bit of a 'mother hen' complex. While being over-protective can be a good thing given her situation, she is at times over-bearing and rather bossy. Don't ever call her on it, though, otherwise you'll get a face-full of scolding. She often believes that she knows what's best for the safety and happiness of those around her, and often acts ignorantly on those beliefs.

Ran is at times oblivious to the attention paid her. She often views her good points (understanding, noble, caring) as necessary, not virtuous. This has gained the admiration of a few young men. Whether it be due to her devotion to Shinichi or her perception of herself being well below average in the looks department, Ran is blissfully unaware of the men who would be all too willing to steal her away from Shinichi. She has been insecure of how people (especially Shinichi) view her, as she is not nearly as smart or popular as her best friend. In addition, she is not particularly ladylike, and she feels that outside of taking care of their more mundane needs, she has little to offer her friends and family.

Due to several frightening encounters as a child and her best friend's outright refusal to acknowledge it, Ran is cripplingly afraid of anything pertaining to the paranormal. She is afraid of ghosts, horror movies, zombies, and any dark and spooky settings.

While Ran ultimately wants to go to college, unlike Shinichi, she's not entirely sure what she wants to study there. She has surrounded herself with law enforcement types her whole life, but she hasn't necessarily felt drawn to that as a career choice herself. Ultimately she wants to score high on her exams so she can go to the same university as Shinichi...assuming he goes to school in Japan. She's entertained the idea of becoming a teacher, seeing as she's excellent with children, but she also wants to get married and have children. However, all aspirations have been placed on hold until Conan goes home (and maybe her mother comes back?). It's hard to plan for the future when you have a father and a little kid to take care of.

Because of Ran's dedication to justice, fairness, and doing the right thing, she is best-suited for the Hufflepuff house. She is a strong and loving individual, but she lacks the courage that would probably tilt her in favor of the Gryffindor community. Compared to her castmates, she is probably one of the more mundane characters, which also suits her being sorted into Hufflepuff, while her castmates are in Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, and Slytherin. If Hufflepuff is full, her fear for the supernatural would probably be over-looked in favor of her willingness to overcome dangerous obstacles to save those she loved, and Gryffindor would accept her into the fold.

Strengths:

Care-taking
Ran spends most of her spare time these days taking care of her father and Conan. As such, she has developed a great maternal sense. She is very responsible and will usually put herself to work without any prodding from others.

Karate
As mentioned above, Ran has developed great stamina and strength from her years studying karate. Canon has shown her to be strong enough to break through stone.

Luck
Ran has ridiculously good luck. She has never lost a game of cards or a lottery. It could be argued this luck bleeds into other areas as well.

Cooking
Most likely due to taking care of her father for years, and Conan after that, Ran has a love for cooking. It doesn't hurt that she's good at it. Her favorite cuisine to make is Italian. Her most popular dish is Japanese curry.

Loyal + Compassionate + Patient
Once you have earned Ran's loyalty, you've got it for good. Ran is very astute towards people's feelings (except Shinichi's), and will often go out of her way to bring people together in friendship or love. She will often put others before herself. She also has a deep love for animals (especially cats).

Weaknesses:

Stubborn
Don't try telling Ran you don't need her. She won't believe you, or she'll think you're wrong. It's very hard to dissuade Ran from something she's set her mind to. It's up to you if you want to bother trying.

Naive
Ran sees things in ideals. She believes that everyone is a good person deep down, and does not understand that people who are capable of loving are also capable of killing.

Spectrophobia
Ran has a paralyzing fear of the paranormal and supernatural. She cannot stand anything to do with the horror genre.

Temper
While Ran is a patient person, she does have a temper tucked somewhere deep within. It takes a lot of provoking over a course of time, but when her temper does come out, it's violent and destructive.

Overbearing
Ran can get a little too doting at times. She will coddle those who don't need it, or care for those that don't deserve it.

Crybaby
Being a young woman with such strong convictions, Ran is prone to crying when her feelings become over-whelming.

COMMUTER DETAILS: Ran would not even think of ever aligning herself with Voldemort. And if she can get over her fear of him, she'd definitely help in taking him down!

POSITION: Student

ORIENTATION: Heterosexual, with a canon interest in Shinichi Kudo (Conan Edogawa, though she doesn't know it). Her dedication to Shinichi is unwavering, in spite of his absence, and while she has had a few men express their interest, she has blinders on, and eyes only for Shinichi.

ABILITIES & POWERS: Unlike her canon counterparts Conan/Shinichi and Heiji, Ran does not have many extraordinary abilities. She is very much your average "girl-next-door," though she does have some virtues and merits that prove her an asset to her genius companions. Therefore, she will probably not be anywhere above average in her studies, though she definitely has her favorite and least favorite classes.

Favorite:

Potions - While Ran doesn't like all aspects of her potions class, it's one that she's pretty good at, thanks to her prolonged experience in the kitchen. Once she gains a firm grasp of ingredients and how they react to each other, Ran can get creative and holds a strong intuition for what will come of the potions she sets out to make. She is also extremely patient, which is a crucial quality for successful potion-makers.

Herbology - This is by far Ran's most favorite class. She loves the idea of using magic and all related topics in order to help people and keep them safe. Due to her caring nature and genuine desire to heal and keep those around her well, she excels in this course and prefers to spend whatever free studying time she has on this particular topic.

Flying - Once Ran gets over her initial fear of elevating on a broom, Ran's physical prowess would allow her to be a strong flyer. She isn't a wreckless flyer, which keeps her in good graces with the instructors. Her biggest struggle is when she's presented with a challenge that could be perceived as risky in any sort. When pushed, however, Ran will overcome and typically do well in flying. She is not immune to accidents, though.

Dueling - In her canon, Ran is a karate champion. This can be translated either in Quiddich or in Dueling at the mods' discretion. Ideally I think she would be better served as a champion duelist, since that seems to be closer to karate than Quiddich would be (much better for Shinichi and soccer, perhaps). Ran is a fair duelist, never resorting to dirty tricks or cheatery. She has a great deal of focus and inner strength, even in the face of danger.

Least Favorite:

Defense Against the Dark Arts - Ran is terrified of horror movies, scary things, and the paranormal. As such, Defense Against the Dark Arts would probably result in her both being crippling scared to the point of not being able to answer questions. She would also get nightmares from topics discussed, as well as cry out when instructors get a little too "into" their lectures.

Arithmancy - Although Ran seems to surround herself with geniuses, Ran herself is not an intellectual. Math is her weakest subject, and it does not mentally engage her, either. It's most likely that this class, more than any other, would require a tutor or a study-group, and she'd probably start one if she can find some kindred spirits.

Charms - While Ran is an easy subject to manipulation, Ran herself tends to read like a book. She wears her heart on her sleeve and believes that honesty is the best policy. Therefore, she will dislike charms on principle, although she would not be above partaking in some of its wiles should the opportunity arise. She may not struggle in the class, but she would participate begrudingly.

WAND: 12" Willow wood with unicorn hair core, firm and whippy

WOOD: WILLOW
Willow wood was chosen as the wood for Ran's wand initially for the fact that it is best-suited for healing, which aligns with Ran's care-taking nature. In addition to its magical properties, willow wands tend to seek out those with insecurites, typically unwarranted. Ran faces several insecurities in her canon, mostly linked to Shinichi, his mysterious absence, waiting for him to return, and questioning whether or not her feelings for him are reciprocated. In addition, Ran's oblivious to the idea that other men would pay her any mind, as she sees herself as plain and lacking any brilliance in comparison to her intelligent and often wealthier friends. Ran also has potential to be a pivotal piece in the game between Shinichi and the Black Organization, but much of that potential has been untapped at this point. Therefore the willow wood of her wand is an ideal match for her.

CORE: UNICORN HAIR
Unicorn hair is one of the more common cores of wands, suitable for a normal girl of "common" abilities. It causes the wand to perform reliably, with little fluxuation and unpredictability. This suits Ran's personality, as someone who tries to offer a place of stability in the turbulent world of law and crime-fighting. Unicorn hair is also least likely to turn towards the Dark Arts, which, as previous explanations above show, Ran would both be too honor-bound and frightened to ever dabble in such dangerous craft. Unicorn hair wands are also the most faithful, much like Ran is diligently faithful to Shinichi and her friends. However, Ran and unicorn hair both are "prone to melacholy." It was probably that very descriptor that really cemented the connection between Ran and the core of this wand. Like the unicorn hair, Ran is not as elitely skilled as those in her canon, although she is strong, she is not as intelligent, which makes her more of a bystander and even a liability in her canon.

BUILD - FLEXIBILITY: FIRM AND WHIPPY, 12.5"
Ran is a girl of strong convictions, and rarely wavers when challenged. She stands firm in her beliefs, and will stand up for the weaker person and for those she's close to in the fave of adversity. Much like Ran herself, her wand is equally unwavering, and is prone to snap if bent too far. Her movements are swift and potent, a single pressure point from a karate chop will break through a pile of wooden blocks. Due to her fierce strikes as a karate champion, her power has translated into her wand, making it whippy. Ran is of average build, but long-legged. To balance out her proportions, her wand measures out to a lengthy 12.5 inches.

STRENGTHS:
Primary: protection spells
Seconary: repairing and healing spells

WRITING SAMPLESFIRST PERSON:

[A very angry brunette girl with hot blue eyes is seen glowering into the video feed.]

To the wise guy who set off the dung bomb in the girl's lavatory.

[She leans in, her eyes narrowing. Be glad it's not in person, or she'd probably be pretty intimidating, staring you down and all.]

I don't know what exactly you were aiming to accomplish, but the only thing you managed to do was upset Moaning Myrtle. [She folds her arms and tilts her head to the side.]

And how do I know it's a 'guy'? Because that's all Moaning Myrtle keeps talking about! Did you really think you'd get away with this scott-free? Without any witnesses?

[Ran's angry expression melts into one of concern and sympathy. Her voice goes down in volume, though the scolding tone still remains.]

Sheesh. If you're going to pull something stupid like that, could you at least do it in a bathroom that doesn't have a poor girl stuck in it? She's already lonely enough as it is, now no one's going to want to visit her.

[Which meant that Ran would be visiting her, the poor thing. But still, no one needed to know that.]

THIRD PERSON:
Ran heard her named called on, and it was as though all the chatter filling the air around her went to a deafening silence. She could never tell if it was just her imagination, or all of her senses honing in on her target. She remembered how Shinichi would often observe that when the time came for Ran to go up against another one-on-one, she would internalize her entire focus.

Ran rarely had her wand out unless she was instructed to. Even in dueling class, while the other students had their wands at ready, Ran kept hers tucked away in its box in her bag. Otherwise, she'd be prone to fiddle with it, and she didn't want it to get worn or tampered with. But now, her name was called, and she reached down into her bag to pull the simple, black box out. She opened it, and resting on red velvet was her wand, what she learned was now an extension of herself.

She held it in her right hand, pressing the back into the heart of her palm. The end was cool, but it quickly warmed to the heat of her grip. Not too tight. She had to continuously remind herself that gripping the wand too tight would only stifle it. She only looked to the opening in the front of the classroom, not stopping to glance back to see who her opponent was. It didn't entirely matter. She would be gentle, but firm. The idea was the knock them down, not hurt them.

It was strange, participating in a duel which called for them to stay in their uniforms. Typically Ran would find the robes to be too cumbersome, causing tangles between her arms and legs. It was harder to dodge, and easier to get hit. Not to mention that the robes caused so much drag...

Her opponent followed her up to the front, and the chatter started to gradually fill the room again. To the casual onlooker, they didn't seem like they were evenly-matched. But it wasn't the appearance or the stature of the person that defined the fight. It was the wielding of their wand that mattered.
