It's been a while since I've posted here, but I don't think I've been too missed. Happily, I've been immersed in work, which is still going well. Today was the Americorps*Vista's last day and she asked me what I thought made a good job. My answer rambled on to say how a good job has room to grow and advance, and recognizes acheivement. And that I didn't really notice that until I worked in a job that did none of that.
This is a fairly golden time for me work-wise for the following reasons:
- They are giving me a raise of $3,000, retroactive to my date of hire. That means that my next paycheck is going to be huge (for me) because it will make up the difference between what I was paid for the last 3 months and what I will be paid from here on out. (Does that make sense?)
- They are giving me my own office. A few months ago, I could only wistfully pine for an office of my own in facebook surveys. Now it's going to be a reality come mid-September. Apparently, my office mates are sad to see me go. Strangely, once I started this job, I didn't mind not having an office to myself as much as I minded at my previous job. Perhaps that is because I'm not answering the phone every 3 minutes.
- They gave me a $600 bonus for supervising youth this summer. I was not expecting that at all. I would have done it anyway, and I actually enjoyed supervising the two girls who were placed with me. Both had troubled pasts (and presents), but at work were very sweet and friendly. Despite the fact that one was 23 and one was 16, they have actually formed a friendship with each other, which I think is good for both of them. If all works out, they will both be working with me for the next 9 months as well, during which I will try to teach them everything I know about event planning (the 16 year old's dream job) and graphic design (the 23 year old may be awakening to that talent-- she provided some awesome illustrations to a cookbook we made). I feel like a proud mama-- I even refer to them as "my girls" despite the fact that I'm only 3 years older than the oldest one.
Moving on from blathering endlessly about my job, we're going to Seattle next week! Tonight I bought a new camera (thank you bonus!). Not a Digital SLR like I've been coveting (I still can't justify spending that much money at once on something I don't know how to use), but Sony Cybershot. It has a lenscap. When was the last time I had a camera with a lens cap? Oh, right, freshman year of college. Tomorrow we need to procure some luggage, and I need to figure out what the heck I'm wearing to the wedding. And wash all our clothing so we're not just bringing dirty clothing and a bottle of febreeze cross country.
