So this week has been rather sucky for me mostly because I don't feel well, I've had a few quizzes and a number of tests, and had my chem lab go horribly wrong. I was pleasantly surprised, however, when today after philosophy class let out, one girl walks up to me and goes, "Just so you know, I totally agree with what you were saying Lindsay! Rock on!" and I'm like, "o.O Thanks?" I mean, I had just been participating in class as usual.
Today's discussion was on a part of the Republic that related the soul to a city's hierarchy with reason being ruler of all other parts of the soul, namely "spirit" and the appetitive element of the soul. So my argument was that this isn't logical because there are certain times when we disregard what is rational for our emotions--namely what the spirited part of us is willing us to do. Some guy came up with a reply to that that, "Well, then reason is saying that instinct is right, so reason is still the ruler." My argument, in essence, was that if it's subconcious, that's not really rational and so it is our instincts ruling rather than reasoned thought. Anyway, it was getting complicated and the prof really wanted to use Spock vs. Captain Kirk references and it was really... strange.
The reason I was so surprised by this girl's comment though was because I haven't talked to her at all this semester, I didn't know that she knew my name even, and it was just rather... strange... to me. Anyway, we walked back towards our dorms (her's is one north of mine) and with a couple other people from the class, we discussed our goals in life (all three of them are philosophy majors and are totally set on living in a cardboard box) and just people's general attitudes.
Evidently, the reason this girl was happy and wanted to give me a pat on the back (metaphorically) was because the argument had, as usual, descended to two people--me and a guy named Collin. Collin is quite bright, but is not open to ANYBODY else's opinion. He argues because "he's right," not because he wants to see which argument is stronger. The girls find him particularly condescending and were happy that I wasn't that way.
Anyway, it's nice to meet some new people. Unfortunately I have no idea what this girl's name is and was too embarassed to ask. I was proud though :D Yay for inflated ego!!
