Calling all computer photoshop people

I've got a logo I've been thinking about using for Love Ride stuff, but I'm having problems eliminating the background of the design. I'll post it here, then explain.

Now, I want to get rid of the white/make the background transparent, so when I put it on top of something else, it's not a big block of white with the design. Make sense? The problem is two-fold for me. First, I don't know how to do it. :p Second, if you look closely, you can see that the background is originally a verrrrrrry light... something else. Blue? (It's particularly noticeable -once someone points it out- in the wings.) Because I didn't know how to make it transparent, I simply erased as much as I could, getting as close to the design as possible (which is why you can still see it in the wings). But it's horribly amateurish. Is there a way to just take the design and put it on a transparent background? (Like a print for a t-shirt, say.)

Help!

Edited, because I used the magic wand tool to get rid of the little bits of extra blue that I didn't want. Now I'm working on moving it to another background colour without bringing the white with it!
