crazy getups tight leopard pants and full airblaster kit yeahhhhhhhh boiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii.
third line.
December 17th, 2005
The last stop of the second annual Rome Premature Jibulation tour brought us to Mountain Creek, deep in the heart of Jersey. We’ve seen some crazy things throughout all these event, but hands down, kids in NJ are just plain nuts. From crazy getups (tight leopard pants and a full Airblaster kit, to thugged out XXXL pants and basketball jerseys) to a legit riot during the product toss, these young shredders don’t know when to call it quits.
Mountain Creek stepped it up with a dope course, featuring a 20 foot down box, a 30 foot super wide flat box, and a street style 30 foot down rail. To support their zany antics, the kids reppin’ dirty Jerz also have smooth style, crazy afterbang, and funny accents. 270 to frontboard was the trick o’ the day, as well as back lips…anything going backward was commonplace. Lots of shredders were spinning all the way through the flat box, with one spinning as much as 1080 (after a crowd member grabbed his arm and initiated the spin), possibly more…the judges are still debating the validity of this one.
After the 160 riders were weeded down to 16 finalists, the real shredding began. Thirteen year old Billy Keil proved to the judges that he didn’t belong in any grom category; he wasn’t just keeping pace with the older riders, he was actually setting the pace most of the time, with super low n’ steezy noseslides on the flat box, and seemingly any combination of spin and slides that he wanted on both the down features. Also stepping up was crowd favorite Kyle Ryan, who had ultra smooth frontboard and press tricks.
While the riding is usually the highlight of any event, the Mountain Creek Premature Jibulation was the exception to the rule. Generally, riders are amped on free product, but the kids in Jersey started a straight up riot over free t-shirts, gloves, bags, etc. Eyewitness accounts include people throwing each other over a fence for a shirt, people throwing trays of food off the balcony onto the crowd for no apparent reason, and some serious pile on action for a box of DVD’s. When all the product was gone and there was nothing left to throw, everyone decided it would be a grand idea to start a snowball fight, which ended presumably badly, after I high tailed it out of there to the safety of my rental car. Note to the general public: If doing a product toss in New Jersey, wear a football helmet and possibly other safety gear including, but not limited to, shoulder pads, chest protector, jock strap, shin pads and cleats.
Thanks to the Mountain Creek events and park staff, and thanks to all the kids who came out. Until next year…over and out.
